Things we did to improve our email open rate from 9% to 52% 👇

We send mails at LaunchPedia every week where we talk about product launch tips and our product announcements. Last october, our mails started landing in spam and our open rate dropped to 9%.

We were disappointed as mails were one of top sources for sales. So, we started working on our deliverability rates.

We did these things that helped our mails to landed in updates again and improved our open rates

1. Pivoted to text-only newsletter

We removed links from the newsletter and started sending text only newsletters, as mails with lesser links will have higher chances of landing in the updates folder.

2. Added numbers in the subject line

Numbers make the subject line more interesting as numbers help us to stand out from the other newsletters. So, we added numbers to almost all of our subject lines.

3. Fewer capital letters & emojis in the subject lines

From our experience, we understood that Gmail doesn’t like using too many capital letters and emojis in the subject line. Whenever we used emojis, our mails landed in promotions instead of updates. So, we stopped using them.

4. Warmed up our domain by sending emails to highly active subscribers frequently

When your mails land in spam, you need to warm up your domain and improve your domain reputation. And to improve your domain reputation, you should have good open rates, people replying to your mails and less unsubscribe rates.

So, we picked subscribers who actively interact with our mails and sent mails to them initially. As these are highly active guys, they are most likely to open our mail and less likely to unsubscribe. This improved our domain reputation a lot

5. CTA that encourages subscribers to reply back to emails in exchange for a free bonus

We asked our subscribers to reply to the mail if they want our guides/list for free. This helped us improve our domain reputation

Example: Reply "email" and we will share readymade templates for these 3 emails.

That’s it guys, With these efforts, our mails landed in updates and our open rate grew to 52%. I hope these will help you if you’re looking to improve your email open and deliverability open rates.

By the way, how do you identify which of your subscribers are the most active?

Does your ESP handle this for you?

Also, how long do you need to do it to warm up your sending domain, how many broadcasts?

Awesome tips! Just to confirm, did you remove all links completely or did you leave one?

Wow, pivoting to text-only is something that blowed my mind, because we all try to impact our audience with big designs and a lot of images. Thanks for this insightful tip

Wondering how can a first-time cold emailer achieve this?

    Thanks

Hey juned, I've heard of (paying) tools that warm up your email, I think they have a pool of emails that interact heavily with all emails you send them, which boosts your domain reputation. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing. I'm unsure if choosing the correct email sender makes a difference. Currently, I'm using Resend as my email sender, and I actually enjoy incorporating emojis in the email subject. So far, everything is going well, including gmail.

Btw, I just launched my new product https://starmail.host, which helps open-source startups send emails to their stargazers.

Sometimes the logic of the big email players is completely incomprehensible.

On the one hand they want emails to contain a link to unsubscribe, on the other hand they don't take into account the fact that if a person subscribes to a newsletter, it can't go into spam.
As a result, it turns into a continuous game - "how to run away from the spam filter".

What do you mean by stopping using capital letters in the subject line? Like all caps? Or did you stop using any capital letters altogether?
