Thinking of building a directory of tools based on the need they serve

Sometimes I find myself looking at an app or tool and wonder whether it would be something that I'd find useful. It made me think I'd like to try and build a needs-based directory of tools, even if it's only for myself.

I don't know how I would organize things exactly, but I'd like to have some raw data to work with. Can I ask this great community to try and put yourselves in the shoes of their customers and describe the customer need your project serves?
