Thinking of building an enterprise ChatGPT

I'm wondering if it is worth building a ChatGPT like interface for enterprise customers.

It would allow

  • multiple users from the same company to log in and chat with GPT-3.5 and GPT-4
  • closely track the usage and cost of conversations
  • allow users to share specific conversations with other team members

Thoughts?

My main thought would be what happens when the company who owns those two services decides to inevitably offer enterprise subscriptions with siloed information and custom prompt guidelines?

If OpenAI was still what it was intended to be and was a full non-profit then this idea would be a no brainer. As it stands, they are going to continue to monetize this and you just outlined the obvious cash cow for them.

The idea will work and there are several small companies that took off doing this already. The problem will be how long they can remain in business before the actual owners of the AI decide that it's time to win at capitalism.

Very true that they could choose to enter into the same space or disadvantage API client builders in some other way - like by charging extra for API access.

That said, the difference between OpenAI and say a Twitter or Reddit which pulled the same switcheroo is that OpenAI's LLMs are just one of many many LLMs out there.

Yes, they are state of the art against which every other LLM is measured but eventually, other players of equal quality will enter the game as well. At that point, the stickiness of the UI/UX and prior history of chats that this client has will come to the fore.

Plus, being inherently social - since chats can be shared within teams - there is also a chance that network effects will come into play.
