This co-working method is what helps me stay focused

Burnout is the number #1 startup killer.

I've made 180k through past projects (ex-Stanford), but every time I hit a rut, I'd fall into a weird slump, feeling lonely and unfocused throughout the day. Some days, I'd wake up, watch netflix, masturbate, then sleep. :'(

I tried pomodoro, time trackers, PM tools, etc. Still ended up burning out :(

I met this other isolated founder Robert. He also shared the same problem, even though he went to WeWorks everyday ---he felt lonely/unfocused/blocked. So we started co-working together on a call.

Compared to pomo -- Both of us felt WAY more energized and work actually feels good. The bonus was that whenever we got stuck, we got to hit each other up, ("Just finished the website, not sure if it makes sense"). And share wins ("OMG I just got my first paying customer--- OKAY here's what I did")

We do a 5 min standup, then go into deep work for 50 mins. Then we debrief for 5 mins on how our tasks went! Over time, other founders started co-working too. In person too! They helped me through personal + startup problems too.

There's ample evidence to show coworking improves health, focus, and creates relationships (win win win). Def recommend checking out other communities, but the one I'm part of is a paid community called https://founderscafe.io -- Lots of founders from Stanford, YC, and other cool backgrounds

BTW Maddie, your line Burnout is the number #1 startup killer is an incredible observation. Many of us know what this feels like. You are not alone.

We do working sessions in the WBE Space and it is super productive. We basically have a virtual work room where a bunch of the members join and start a common timer to work together. Once the timer finishes we have a short chat and repeat the process. Is super productive

I agree with you said and like what you're building, but it would have been more appropriate to disclose that it's your own platform

    Nice self ad

Absolutely agree that focused co-working is great for concentration and productivity, all while banishing isolation!!

I'm an introvert and used to get so exhausted going into an office every day. I thought working from home permanently when the pandemic hit would be a godsend but it ended up pushing me too far in the other direction and I was experiencing the same things. Having a community of people on the same journey but not people you work with has been helpful with finding the balance between introverted hermit and extroverted social butterfly.

Great idea. I believe it is a correct that through co-working while on a call or in person, you can do more work until you feel burned out. But more generally it is also important to know your own limits. And I've noticed that you shouldn't work until you've reached your limit, that just calls for a burnout, because you can't recover properly. You need to work just enough so that you can recover fine using the rest of your day.

Places like WeWork are full of people doing cool stuff, but can be incredibly lonely if you're a sole founder. And working from home as many of us do is even lonelier at times. What you're describing sounds amazing.

So if I understand?... the people in the cohort are all 100% independent businesses doing your own thing. But you chat/meet/converse as though you are all part of the same company? So offering advice, feedback, thoughts and even just "did you see that great show on TV last night".

So just like in a big corporation, you might find you become friends with people in completely different divisions who's role is a million miles from yours. But you still have that camaradery of working for the same company, moaning about the office politics or that new big boss, or wishing each other a happy birthday, etc.

I think the 5/50/5 model is too tight - just my thought. Perhaps it needs to be more natural, a few times per day or something. But overall, I love it.

If I didn't already have my current startup, I think this is something I'd work on, there is potentially a massive opportunity to create something bigger to support many more indie founders. There's 30,000 of us on IH for a start!!! 😊

Can we build a resource list of similar existing schemes (globally)?

      Exactly!

Down to try out other kinds of models. Agreed!!! There's so many remote indie hackers this could help

Woohoo feel so special being highlighted in your content @gay

Being a founder is hard, but doesn't have to be lonely!

Just this last week I was feeling massively burnt out. Starting to lose some momentum of working just a little bit on the SAAS every day or every other day.

I took a long weekend to play games with friends, hang out with my family, and unplug (no coding). Just yesterday I had a long 1.5-hour long call with my co-founder and our alpha tester to talk about things that are going well with the product, improvements/suggestions, and talk through new feature ideas.

After those types of calls and long weekends, I personally get a lot of energy back to start working again.

It however is a balancing act. Being the single dev talking about features I REAAALY want but knowing there is a mountain in the backlog can also be discouraging lol.
