This is How Session Musicians See You Making AI Music.

This is How Session Musicians See You Making AI Music

I've been in music since the first days of Serum and FL. I remember when those plugins dropped and the whole producer community lost their minds over how insane the sound design possibilities were. I remember when FL Studio was still being called "that toy DAW" by people using Pro Tools. I remember the whole "that's not real music" argument playing out in real time.

And now I'm watching the exact same debate happen again with AI.

word for word. same energy. different tool.

Someone in a thread said something that stuck with me. they said the conversation around AI music has shifted from

"Is this a good song?" to "does this creator deserve to be heard?"

because they're right. and that's a genuinely weird place for music to end up.

let's talk about the pandemic for a second.

when covid hit, the entire live music industry collapsed overnight. session musicians lost everything. studios went quiet. the whole infrastructure that the "real music" world was built on just... stopped.

The isolation, the lost income, the closed doors, people started looking for alternatives.

Remember the Will Smith spaghetti video?

early AI video was a complete disaster. it was obviously fake, obviously broken, obviously not real. people laughed at it.

and then two years later you literally could not tell anymore.

AI music is on the exact same curve. the early Suno outputs were obviously AI. the artifacts were everywhere. the structures were weird. the vocals had that uncanny quality that made your brain go "something is off."

AI music quality right now are making the exact same mistake as the people who laughed at that spaghetti video.

it's only a matter of time before the quality becomes so genuinely good that you cannot tell the difference at all. not 97% of listeners can't tell. literally nobody can tell.

now let's talk about the cracked VSTs.

because this is the part where the "stolen copyrights" crowd loses me completely.

the same producers who are loudest about AI stealing from artists — how many of them came up on cracked versions OF DAWS and Vsts?? how many learned sound design on a pirated copy of Serum, Spire or even old skool Sylenth1? how many built their whole early catalog using plugins they definitely didn't pay for?

. that's the real history of independent music production for most people who weren't born with money or connections.

and now suddenly when AI makes production accessible to a whole new group of people who also don't have money or connections...

Now we care deeply about intellectual property?

The selective outrage is a little hard to take

seriously...

but here's what I actually believe.

the session musicians who are genuinely angry about AI aren't wrong to feel displaced, Session work is real and it deserves to be taken seriously.

and the Suno creators who are making music they never could have made before — the people who always had something to express and finally have a tool to express it — they're not wrong either. those songs are real.

AI is just the newest one on the list.

Are you a session musician who adapted to AI or a Suno creator who came from a traditional background? what actually changed for you?
