This is my framework to create a killer user onboarding. How do you do user onboarding?

Hello, Indiehackers πŸ‘‹

I would like to show you my framework to create a user onboarding. Also would like to know how are you doing it or any other advice πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»

You can read it also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/borjasolerme/status/1465749402526654466?s=20

Let's start:

We are going to follow these 10 steps:
Framework

1. Start with the goal and show value ASAP 🎯

First of all which should be the goal? what is the one thing the user needs to walk away with?

Show them how it's going to improve their lives. In less than 5min if you have not found value you are going to leave it

2. Tell how it's going to improve their life, NOT SELL FEATURES πŸš€

People don't buy products; they buy better versions of themselves. When you're trying to win customers you should tell them how it's going to improve their lives.

3. Instead of images show how to use the product

Instead of using simple images or character designs, add gifs about how your product works and will help me.

I don't want to read and I don't want to solve a puzzle about how to use your product.

4. Don't be too sales-y before showing the value

Don't ask to add my credit card before you have shown me how your product is going to help me. If you ask for my money before knowing how it works I will leave in most of the cases.

5. If you ask for info tell them why you ask it

Why are you asking about my age? and about my preferences?

Always tell to the user how asking these questions is going to help him in the product.

6. Let your users know what to expect (how long is going to take?)

Is the onboarding going to be long? short?

I like this example from uxcel app
uxcel

7. Design for play, let the user take the action (DON'T MAKE ME THINK)

Let people try things, let them perform where to click, and do the next step.

If you need to guide them always, your product UX is not good enough.

8. Bring a sense of immersion, tooltips, videos, etc... hijack user attention

Once you add a new feature you think:

I am going to add tooltips to show the product,

STOP!
tooltips can be distracting, controlling, and flaky

9. Lead the user to take actions that improve their lives

You need to guide the user to take the actions that will bring them more value and improve their life. Not guide them to every action.

10. Guide them always in the future, iterate, and improve the onboarding always

User onboarding is not a project you do once

It is a lifetime project. Create a cycle of iteration, analyzing, and improving

Users should be guided always and the onboarding always can be improved
