First of all, I am not saying you should not read at all. Reading is a great way to expand your knowledge base. However, like everything in life you should find balance.
I used to be the type of person who would set a goal to read 50 books a year but eventually, at the end of the year I would be stuck at the same place I started. A lot of unconnected dots.
This year I realized that if I want to become more successful and productive I should not read every book self-improvement and self-help YouTubers recommend to me.
I realized it's better to read 10 books this year but apply core concepts and principles that align with my mission and purpose in life.
Ironically, these realizations came to me while reading the book, Millionaire Fastlane by M.J. De Marco. I was mesmerized by how he cuts through the bullshit. While reading I felt like he was trying to convey a message instead of adding words to increase the page count.
If you can read 50 books this year and apply everything, good for you, keep doing it if it's your optimum.
If you want to read books you must understand that books, like any other form of content, can be trash and high-quality. You need to understand and know more about the author who wrote the book and why they are credible to write about the given topic.
Reading should not be one of your biggest career development goals. It should supplement your purpose and give you clarity when you need it.
In order to summarize this advice:
-> Read books that complement your career and goals
-> Learn to distinguish between trash books and good books
-> Don't ONLY read, apply the knowledge you learn (Following through with massive action is what will get you results, solely reading, unfortunately, won't.)
-> Quality over quantity
-> Approach reading with mindfulness
-> You don't need to read every book, watch every self-help video, or digest every form of content out there
Shift your focus to PRODUCING and massively taking ACTION and soon you will gain life experience and LEARN from it because that is the best way to learn.
