This Widget Increased My Landing Page Engagement by 40% - Eyes That Follow Your Cursor

Hey Indie Hackers!

I built a simple embeddable widget that makes face photos track your cursor. Sounds gimmicky, but the engagement numbers surprised me.

The results on my own landing page:

- ⬆️ 40% increase in time on page

- ⬆️ 2.3x more scroll depth

- ⬆️ 23% more clicks on CTA buttons

## Why This Works (Psychology)

Humans are hardwired to notice eyes looking at them. When a face on your website "watches" visitors move their cursor, it:

1. Breaks the scroll - People pause to interact

2. Creates curiosity - "Wait, is this following me?"

3. Adds personality - Static pages feel more alive

4. Increases engagement - Interactive = memorable

It's the digital equivalent of the Mona Lisa effect.

---

## How It Works (For Developers)

Super simple integration:

```html
<!-- Paste this one line -->
<script src="[https://rlu.ai/widget/eyes-follow.js](https://rlu.ai/widget/eyes-follow.js)" data-id="YOUR_ID"></script>
Setup:
  1. Upload a face photo (yours, your team, your mascot)
  2. AI processes it (3-5 minutes)
  3. Get your embed code
  4. Paste into your website
Performance:
  • ✅ 60fps smooth tracking
  • ✅ Works on mobile (touch tracking)
  • ✅ No dependencies
  • ✅ Vanilla JS, framework-agnostic
  • ✅ ~2MB total (optimized delivery)
Real Use Cases
Developers are using it for:
1. SaaS Landing Pages
  • Put founder's face in hero section
  • Visitors feel "watched" → more engagement
  • One user reported 18% increase in demo signups
2. Personal Portfolios
  • "My face follows you around"
  • Memorable first impression
  • Stands out in competitive job market
3. Agency Websites
  • Team member photos that engage
  • Interactive "About Us" sections
  • Client meetings: "Check out our website"
4. Marketing Campaigns
  • Product mascot that tracks cursor
  • Interactive storytelling
  • Social media shareability
5. E-commerce
  • Model photos that "look at" products
  • Increased product page engagement
  • Fun brand personality
What I Learned Building This
1. Engagement > Perfection
  • Launched with "good enough" quality
  • Users care more about the effect than pixel-perfect accuracy
2. Demo = Everything
  • 10x more signups after adding interactive demo
  • "Show, don't tell" is real
3. Processing time is a feature
  • 3-5 minutes feels premium ("AI is working hard")
  • Instant = suspicious quality
4. Developers love one-line integrations
  • No npm install, no config files
  • Just paste and go
5. Fun tech spreads faster
  • People share it because it's cool
  • "Check out my website" becomes a conversation starter
Technical Challenges (Without Spoiling Secrets)
  • Smooth tracking: Getting 60fps was harder than expected
  • Mobile optimization: Touch tracking ≠ cursor tracking
  • Cross-browser compatibility: Safari was... fun
  • Performance: Balancing quality vs load time
  • AI consistency: Making sure all angles look natural
Current Status
✅ Live and processing ~50 photos/day
✅ Used on 30+ websites
✅ Average engagement increase: 35-40%
🎯 Goal: 100 active widgets by end of month
Questions for You
  1. Would you use this? On what type of site?
  2. Pricing thoughts? What's fair for this?
  3. Feature requests?
    • Batch processing for teams?
    • API access?
    • React/Vue components?
    • Custom animations (blink, wink)?
  4. Concerns?
    • Privacy?
    • Performance?
    • Browser support?
The Origin Story
This started as a side experiment while building RLU.AI (my main AI photo product). I was testing AI capabilities and thought "what if faces could follow the cursor?"
3 weeks later, here we are. Sometimes the best products come from "what if?" moments.
P.S. - If you try it and see engagement improvements, I'd love to hear your numbers! Building in public, so all feedback helps.
P.P.S. - Yes, the irony of using an engagement widget to promote an engagement widget is not lost on me. 😄
    Congratulations on your launch. It looks impressive! What channels are you exploring to attract early users?
    I recently visited your website and was really impressed by your work. I noticed there’s no live chat window for visitors, which made me think of a small project I’ve been developing.
    It’s an AI-powered chat tool that lets you add a customer support window quickly and easily. It’s free to test at the moment and could improve how visitors connect with your team.
    Let me know if you’d like to give it a try — I’d be glad to share access.
