Those who lost jobs to Covid, how are you holding up?

Lost my job in April due to COVID. I had just taken a promotion in January and then that whole management layer was wiped out due to COVID. When they broke the news to me, I thought of this quote by Marcus Aurelius:
“The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing, because an artful life requires being prepared to meet and withstand sudden and unexpected attacks.”
So I thought about how I could make the most of it. I could take the lemon life just gave me and try to make lemonade, or ... I could try to paint that lemon f*cking gold.
I brought my expenses down to as low as possible and started going through my best startup ideas. In looking for opportunities with my alma mater, I found out the school offers a grant/fellowship for new startup founders that are students or alumni. I applied with my best idea, Heirloom Health, and got in. That took care of any money problems for a few months. So all summer I have been working on that. It’s made a little bit of money but I don’t think it’s going to be my ticket to full time fulfillment. Along the way, I encountered tons of other problems I had and my target market was having and am rolling that into building the next thing (hopefully launching idea #2 by end of week)!
Even though taking the plunge was forced by losing my job, I’ve learned so much by investing in myself.

Keep your head up and look at how this opens up the next big opportunity for you. Your last company didn’t deserve you and you’re going to shock them with whatever you do next!

Startup I was with went under, took it slow and found a job within a month from the time I started looking.

Lost my job not too long ago - I've been holding up well. I don't have a new job yet, but I've also purposefully been taking things slow and working on some projects.

Not sure where you're based, but if you have unemployment benefits available to you, I would definitely start looking into that, because it's absolutely been helpful (albeit not a complete stopgap). In terms of finding your next thing, depending on what type of job you're looking for, I would just look into the normal outlets (e.g. LinkedIn), reach out to recruiters, reach out to former colleagues, etc. A lot of people, ironically, are also trying to fill jobs right now.

And if you're part of a larger layoff (as I was), it's good to stay in touch with those folks and maybe get a little community going. You're all in the same boat, and you can all help each other out. Our team created a private slack channel for people to stay in touch (if they wish), share job openings, etc.
