Thoughts on handling disposable emails?

This is a question for those running a SAAS business: Do you do anything if a user signs up for an account or more importantly, starts a trial/subscription using a disposable email address?

I'm on the fence about what to do.

  • I'm concerned about the potential for fraudulent payment transactions.
  • I think it's possible some folks with valid reasons will use a disposable email address with a real credit card.

Thoughts?

You can't catch them all anyway, they are always one step ahead with new domains. Email address is becoming more and more a private thing, almost like physical address. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable using the same email address for my on-line banking account, on-line broker, government services and some startup's website.

    I use:

    1. disposable (one-use) email addresses
    2. burner email addresses (which I eventually delete) that forward email to my main email address, but can't be used for replying
    3. email addresses for particular persons/services which I create and delete at will on my own domain

Plot twist: I use disposable credit cards as well.

Interesting. So...if a good user can be one that has both a disposable email and a disposable credit card, it's generally a bad signal for fraud prevention. Kind of a bummer, to be honest. I don't get too many chargebacks, but each and every single one is annoying.

I don't even count those. Some people never intend to buy, some are just using free trial. Try to reach them back after they cancel, offer them extended trial for a short talk and ask them what would make them stay.

          That's excellent advice.

I know this is an old post but I am writing this for anyone who is currently dealing with similar issues.

I completely agree with the people in comment section that many people want to try your product out without telling you who they are. And that is why many people use disposable/temporary emails.
But when we start email campaign, we can see that many of emails that sent are hard bounced. because those email addresses may be disposable/temporary,
Fake or non-existing ones. this will result in damaging your IP/sender domain reputation.

It is really time and resource consuming task to maintain an up-to-date list of disposable email service providers.

Its always better to delegate this task to a reputed third party online services like bouncebadger.com so that you can focus on your product's primary goal.
