Thoughts on using available food inventory and recipes to help reduce food waste?

Hey everyone. We are YLLI, a food inventory and budgeting management app. We are currently in beta and live in the App Store for US at the moment. We have a bunch of ideas, but don't know how to prioritize them. So we decided to create rough drafts of these ideas into prototypes.

For this feature, users will have access to recipes through search and the inventory. Recipes through search will show what's possible with the available items in the inventory. Recipes through inventory will show what's possible while in the item info screen. And there will be a marker to show how many ingredients the user has in their inventory. Here is the prototype if you want to play around with it and a quick video.

Let us know what you guys think! We plan to create these posts often. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

This is pretty cool. I have always dreamed about my fridge/pantry telling me what's in stock.

The only issue I see with this is tracking that users consume overtime (a lot of effort required from the user). To counter this, I would have the user select the recipes they have prepared, and have the app adjust the amount of ingredients accordingly from the inventory.

Still, this would be a very rough/approximate figure as users are likely to snack or use extra portions of some ingredients here and there. But better than having them adjust their inventory manually.

Agreed with your statement about tracking consumed items. Manually updating items is a very tedious process. We've thought about different ways on how to update an item, like using voice. Your idea of adjusting the amount based on the recipes is an interesting one.
