Thoughts on WordPress

A while ago I was really against using WordPress for anything other than a blog, because you know, it's blogging software. Recently I've been playing around with writing plugins for it though and am starting to come around.

Here's the thing: what is the one piece of software that you could run on almost any hosting provider in the world? It's WordPress! Whats that one piece of software that you could run for less than $5 a month as a website? It's WordPress.

The indie hackers are a scrappy people, given it's ubiquity, low cost and the amount of help you can get with configuring plugins or writing your own custom PHP it's a perfectly good way to go.

WordPress has become the Windows of the web.. in good and bad.

It's a fully fledged CMS now.

Blogging has always been at its core, but you can create any kind of website with it.

Yes, WordPress now occupies a significant place for every developer. It simplifies the development of the fact that with the help of templates you can make any site and it will be very useful for every developer. Personally, it was a revelation for me when I started using https://motopress.com in order to create a specific site with interesting widgets. This innovation was useful for me.

Wordpress is an excellent platform when you're just starting out or just want to test your idea or need a simple website. It's ridiculously easy to set up and it's cheap to host and maintain. You just have to be vigilant about keeping WP and your plugins updated and secure.

As your traffic grows into the thousands, you'll want to migrate your site to more WP specialized hosting services like Kinsta or WPEngine. They provide WP-specific tools and support.

And if your business becomes big enough, you will need to graduate from WP to a custom built web app hosted in the cloud, maintained by a team of developers 😎

I did WordPress development for a number of years and built several high profile websites and SaaS products using it. I think WordPress is great for someone who is not a developer or who is not an experienced developer or if you have a project with a very small budget. Other than that I don't believe it's a great tool to choose.

Here's the thing: what is the one piece of software that you could run on ANY hosting provider in the world? It's Static Sites! What's that one piece of software that you could run for less than $5 a year as a website? It's Static Sites. Should you worry about updating your WordPress with security patches in time? Nope, no maintenance is required at all.

Static site sounds cool but how do you manage that for content marketing?
