Wouldn't be surprised. I downloaded TikTok to see what it's all about - part of the onboarding was having me select what I was interested in; supposedly for a catered experience. All I see is young girls (probably mostly underage) dancing and I don't think I've seen anything science related, unless pimple popping is a science... 🤮
It was that way for me at the start too, but it soon learned what I was interested in based on likes and swipes. Now I rarely see hot girls dancing and most commonly see musicians, craftspeople, comedians, sportspeople, chefs, etc and see interesting insights into industries and professions I otherwise wouldn't. After reddit it's my favourite social platform.
I signed up yesterday and had a similar experience. It's smart to ask people to customize their feed, but at the end of the day if they're just surfacing the most popular videos, you're going to get a lot of stuff like this. Niche topics only work with niche audiences, but TikTok has 500M active users.
Not surprised at all. Just another reason I'm not signing up. 🤷🏻♂️
Unfortunately, far too common with a lot of apps, especially with dating apps, which seem to 'seed' their initial user base with attractive females mainly, in order to get their core user base using the app.
On the other hand, my musician son has around 30K+ followers on TikTok now, and just had one of his videos hit the 1 million+ views, so I guess he falls into the 'right' aesthetics for the platform! 😉
