Timing the Market

Timing is something that isn't talked about a lot.

You can have the best idea in the world, launch it at the wrong time and see it fall into oblivion. Even something that appears to be a bad idea launched at the correct time has a real chance at gaining traction.

Clubhouse launching when people are locked in their homes, looking for new ways to connect with people, might have been planned, but the timing was very fortuitous.

When Dimitar reached out to me recently about working on a new project, I liked the idea a lot, but thought a lot about the timing.

Since the idea was related to the current pandemic we are living in, the need to launch the project quickly was very important. Launching it next month, or even next week may mean missing the opportunity to catch the eye of the audience we were hoping to attract.

Rather than spending a long time planning out our project, doing design and development simultaneously we were able to get our new project, designed and built in just 5 days.

We didn't plan it, but since we were so focused on building and launching, we had almost all our discussions on Twitter via DMs.

So what did we build: Will My Job Give Me Covid-19?

As cities, states and countries around the world are relaxing stay at home orders, we are naturally concerned about the risks of returning to work.

Using research from the New York Times and the UK Government, we were able to build a (hopefully) easy to use website that allows visitors to lookup their job and see the potential risk they may face returning to work.

Dimitar did a fantastic job of the design, and I used the Tall Stack to build the website.

Would love to know what you think of our latest project, and the timing of our launch. We just launched on Product Hunt today.

Your post reminded me of Scott Adams' (Dilbert Creator) "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" book. They had the idea for YouTube ( video on the internet) and launched in 2001'ish but internet speed was too slow and costly to stream videos. 5 years later Google bought YouTube $1.6B. Look at the whole grocery delivery startups that went bust in the dot com era and now. Timing is everything. Strike while the iron is hot. Good luck.

Thanks, those are some great examples of unfortunate timing!

Good idea of identifying a use case for a current problem. It isn’t always obvious what to do in these situations.

Does something like this have an eventual monetisation play, or is purely for the fun of using the analytics in an interesting way (while presumably providing benefit to people worried about returning to work)?

This is probably good lead generation for a consulting service that helped companies improve their work environments for health and wellness, but sadly not something I'll be doing.

For me it was something we could do quickly and provide some immediate benefit to people worried about going back to work.

Such a good idea and perfect timing! Reminds me WillRobotsTakeMyJob which is a success! Hope you can go even beyond with Will My Job Give Me Covid-19
