Tiny monthly revenue - should I update my MVP?

I created an iOS app 3-4 years ago which is privacy focused after noticing some people on reddit complain there wasn't a good app available.

I kinda just made it for fun and to learn.

I knocked together a very basic MVP which would solve the problem that I read on reddit, which is does solve.
But it seems more people are interested in the app, and I believe it's very buggy and might not even work properly for them as the retention seems low and I'v had some bad reviews.

To be honest I haven't paid much attention to it, but after going through my records... for the past 3 years i'v been consistently getting new purchases. (very small amount every day).

e.g For the past year i'v had 292 sales (@2.99)

I'v done no marketing whatsoever for it except make a post on reddit (google first page takes me to a reddit post so I made a comment in hope that people would see it and download).

But after checking the iTunes data, the customers seem to mostly come from searching the app store:

  • App store search = 260 sales
  • App store browse = 15 sales
  • Web referral = 14 sales
  • App referral = 2 sales

So i know we are talking tiny numbers here. But I literally have not worked on this for 3 years.

So I'm generating around 65$ profit on average a month, passively.

I'm trying to decide if it's even worth my time to try and grow this app a little bit. The numbers are tiny but they have been consistent for 3 years, so that would show a demand for the app in some way?
There are some competitors as i mentioned which are definitely leading the niche, but their app is very clunky. When mine works its very slick (but its incomplete for all use cases)

If i was to finish the app so it's fully functional, i would still need to solve the marketing problem.
My ideas:

  • See if i can get more installs from google via SEO
  • Optimise for the app store search terms (and somehow compete with the competitors?)

What would you do here?
I don't know what the potential is here for charging only 2.99 and trying to capture more of the niche market.

I would definitely do the marketing first. Don't build anything more. I would try post the product in tons more places online, maybe write some articles about it and try to get search traffic for free.
