I've found the most ROI from doing cross promotions or sponsoring other newsletters with the audiences I want to reach. I can pay a few hundred bucks and get a decent number of subs in return.
I also just started working with the ConvertKit sponsor network. Each month I set aside some budget to promote my newsletter in some of the other big creator newsletters like Jay Clouse, Nathan Berry, etc.

That's some great advice! I've been trying to find some other newsletters to do cross promotions / sponsorships, but haven't had much luck with it yet.

I also build lead magnet now. Currently i use gsearch ads as traffic. Still looking for alt traffic source. I think i will start with reddit

I just tell you what I'm currently doing to increase my newsletter audience.
Just commenting. Currently only focused on creating value by giving a helping hand in every 'need advice' post on SubReddit. It's a bit slow line but it's definitely working for me now.

Basically it almost the same as all other content creating. Trust and provide something that can improve other people life.
People are seriously not care about your newsletter so you need attract their attention and make them think this guy can make my life better so I need to follow this guy.
That the basic idea. If you cannot reach that there is no reason to subscribe to newsletters.
I have a couple of courses on this and have grown a few newsletters to thousands of readers. Here's a few ideas:
An overlooked part is to make sure your newsletter is something that is solving a problem - a job newsletter which might change someone's life will usually grow faster than one that less value .
Once you have a valuable newsletter I would use it in places with a lot of traffic like Reddit. Don't be too self-promoting and actually participate in the sub-reddit as well.
Be sure to mention it on social media and if you feature someone else in your newsletter , tag them
Also, add it to directories like inbox reads.

Reddit seems to be the most common place that I've found.
II haven't heard of inbox reads before, but I think that's a great place to start!
Check if your audience likes to read it in a daily basis or prefere weekly or monthly.
