An answer you probably read hundred times already, but still... You need to find where your target audience "hangs out" and connect with them. One actionable tip would be - Quora. Search for questions that can be solved with your web app or at least you have knowledge to provide descent answer.

One of the most effective ways for promoting to students is to get people posting flyers on the physical bulletin boards that are lined in most schools/colleges.
Another option is to find the right mailing-list and writing out of a good value-proposition for each list so that people want to click.
Recruiting student ambassadors to do the above and perhaps sponsor events can be very helpful.
Finally, most schools have different fairs near the beginning (for activities) and the end of the year (for jobs) - doing some sort of presence there should also be helpful ... though it might perhaps have the lowest ROI among the different options.
This above mentioned approach would be suitable if one was targeting a local market. Lets say if I were to target international students, what do you recommend as an approach?
@qsmrf - I do know international students and the above should actually work really well with them (in my opinion).
But, that does not matter. Take a step back if only to confirm. Put an ad out, get on a call with a few such students, and see where they are getting influenced from.
If I was you, I would start networking and building connections with colleges/universities and lecturers and see if there is an opportunity for them to distribute your product amongst their students.
If you can get an institution to endorse your product, then you can build massive validation and credibility upfront for an unknown product and without having to invest a tonne of dollar into trying to reaching the students directly.
What is your product? I used to lecture at a college and university in the UK, maybe I can give you some better pointers.
Hi, Thanks for the really useful comment. I think this approach can definitely be used. My product is a simple website that allows the user to first check their eligibility (by completing a form) - after that, we then provide the student with a web form to complete their admission application. https://www.isaseducation.com/

If my immediate network of family/friends doesn't fit my user base, I usually post to a subreddit that might find it useful. Self-promotion is usually looked down on on reddit, but I find if I'm participating in the community, my marketing is more effective. It's also important to not frame the reddit posts as obvious marketing, but to frame it through how it might solve a problem that community might face.
As an example, I've created a bot for alerts about limited surprise sneaker releases and would promote it on the sneakers subreddit by posting something like, "I've been taking a lot of Ls on sneakers (especially these damn surprise drops), but don't want to follow account X because they spam me with ads. I know how to code, so I made an alert bot I'm now using to catch surprise drops. I figured I should share with you guys and hopefully it can help some of you cop!"
Yup, using sub-reddits were also on my agenda. Your approach makes sense and its genuine as well. I'll try it out.
