Hello, guys! I'm thinking of starting my own side project. The thing I think about is a service that allows you build your linux distribution based on programs and packages you want to get. I think it can be used by companies that provide a distribution as their products (I've been working in one of these companies for a while). I just need an hones opinion, if this service is possibly monetisable or not? Would it be really required or not. Is it a good idea to start with?
Thank you!
I would say no. Anyone who needs a custom Linux distribution probably has enough technical know-how to automate package installation.
How do you beat a simple apt-clone command?
Or if you're building machine images, what would you do that packer.io doesn't?
That being said, it does sound like a useful learning exercise.
Thanks a lot!
My vote is yes - give it a try.
You might hear a lot of positive/negative opinions here about the idea but until you test it out in the real market - you are not gonna know if it's worth pursuing or not.
It's the same as I would ask you if you liked my T-shirt, you might say yes but until you write a dollar check for it I will be pretty unsure about it. ;-)
Test out your idea with an MVP - there are a bunch of tools online and guides that can help you validate your idea without putting much effort. If you do struggle with finding some, PM me and I will help you out.
Cheers,
Thank you for your advise, maybe I will write to you in some time :)
