To emoji or, or not to emoji?

Hey indie hackers ๐Ÿ‘‹

It wouldn't be a launch if I didn't start second guessing everything...

I'm about to launch a line of hoodies to my ecomm store, Maker Threads, but had a last minute change of heart with the designs.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on weather to include the designs with or without the emojis. I've added some examples below.

Would appreciate your thoughts ๐Ÿ™

    With! With with with.

For clarity - I think you should do them with emojis.

    ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‡ ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐ŸŽ„

    1. 1

Don't know if I got the message ๐Ÿ˜‰

You've done good job convincing me!

      1. 2

        So that's with emojis. Over.

Please include the emojis in your design.

        Emojis are essential.

Anything without an emoji is an afront to typesetting generally.

        Is that clear?

        :p

        1. 2

It took some convincing, but I think I got it!

  2. 2

Prefer them without emoji. Main thing with emojis is that Apple does own the rights to them, so best to stay safe from any legal troubles too! :)

    1. 1

Thanks Janel! Is there any particular reason you prefer the plain text?

Is it just a perosnal preference, or do you think it helps the product look cleaner/more premium.

      1. 1

I think emojis do change over the years, and you run the risk of having something that looks outdated whereas fonts are more classic.

I come from a biased point of view though as I don't use emojis very much!

  3. 2

I like the ones without emojis more. I think the emojis don't fit so good to the font and makes it look cheap. But maybe if you can use/find other emojis that fit better to the font i probably would use emojis.

    1. 1

      Awesome feedback, appreciate it.

  4. 2

I like it without. It keeps it clean but offering both as a customization would be a better approach.

    1. 1

Offering both could also be an option.

  5. 2

    Hoodies With Emoji are better

    1. 2

Thanks! I'm leaning towards them at the moment.

  6. 1

With with with!! So much cooler.

    1. 2

      Okay, you've convinced me!

  7. 1

You're not going to like this answer, but it depends which emoji and which word, too.

    1. 1

I do agree. There's a fine art to the choice of emoji.

  8. 1

I like it more with, but I'd say it depends on your target - with emojis is more informal. Good luck with it!

    1. 2

Valid point. The brand is designed to be fun and engaging, so emojis could be a good fit.

  9. 1

    Yeah,I would add them.

But maybe on the left side...?

    1. 1

Personally I do prefer the pocket placement on the side too, but the text gets a little too small.

  10. 1

    I like the last 2.
Not a big fan of the font on first 2.

    1. 1

      Awesome, thanks!

  11. 1

I think the bootstrapped hoodie with the emoji looks cheap. The Maker with the emoji looks great.

Have you checked out Microsoftโ€™s emojis? I love those right now and they look better than appleโ€™s IMO.

    1. 1

      Cheers, appreciate the insights!

Will check out the Microsoft versions and see how they turn out.

      1. 1

I suggest you do. (If you plan to use emojis)

  12. 1

I say without. The indiehackers community seems to be VERY inclined to add emojis to everything, and I donโ€™t know why. They have a time and a place imho. either way, I definitely prefer no emoji

    1. 1

Interesting point. It's looking like emojis are the most popular right now.

      1. 1

        Emojis for the win ๐Ÿ˜‚

Is it not possible to offer shirts with and without emojis? Why alienate the non-emoji crowd and vice versa?

        Yours, the emoji-obsessed-weirdo.

        1. 1

These are live on the store now if you wanted to check them out!

Thanks again for your input. I had no other choice but to go for the emojis ๐Ÿ˜‰

        2. 1

I definitely can offer both, but I didn't want to overload my store with different variations.

As contrary as it sounds, giving customers fewer choices can also help them decide faster.

          1. 2

I suppose being the go-to emoji related outfitters is better than the outfitters that sometimes does emojis and sometimes does not because it tries to please everyone.

Is this a lesson in product focus? Because whether it's emojis or software features, one cannot please everyone.
