I guess it depends on the person, but I personally have never found conferences particularly useful...for anything. I've attended a couple of big ones through startup programs where we basically get a stand for free and even then I felt like it wasn't a good use of my time.

A lot of people say that they go to conferences to:

    1. Meet Investors
    • It's possible. I've met a couple of ones that I'm still in touch with today and I know that VCs do go to conferences to look for leads. But no investors is going to write you a check during the conference, so you're really just better off doing your research online and finding a warm intro to your leads.
    1. Meet Customers
    • Unless you're a big company selling to startups (i.e. AWS, Mailchimp, etc), you won't find any relevant leads here. The attendee demographic is too diverse for it to be useful for any startup. There are better and cheaper ways to acquire early users.
    1. Meet Cool People
    • Trust me when I say that the people building the best products are too busy to attend conferences. I'm not saying that the people attending conferences are bad people, it's just that the ones you would really want to meet aren't going to be there.
    1. Meet the Speakers
    • You won't be able to. They're usually gone after they speak or they return to their respective groups.
