For most indiehackers, checking LinkedIn, X, Reddit, Hacker News, and Google by hand takes a lot of time. It also makes competitor research inconsistent.
SocialListeningAPI lets Claude search those public sources through a single MCP connection. You ask questions via Claude and it will run the searches, filter crappy , and returns a
short brief with source links.
This is useful for finding:
For this guide we'll cover a simple MCP based workflow on connecting SociallisteningAPI to Claude.
SocialListeningAPI has a published Claude Connector. Setup takes a few steps:
SocialListeningAPI and select Connect. If the connector is not visible in your workspace, use the custom setup on the
SocialListeningAPI MCP page.
Replace the example name and domain, then paste this into Claude:
Use the SocialListeningAPI connector to research CompetitorName.
Search LinkedIn, X, Reddit, Hacker News, and Google for:
- CompetitorName
- competitor.com
- CompetitorName pricing
- CompetitorName launch
- CompetitorName alternative
- CompetitorName too expensive
- CompetitorName missing feature
Keep only product changes, pricing changes, customer decisions, named comparisons, repeated
complaints, workarounds, and new use cases.
Return:
1. Confirmed changes
2. Customer decisions
3. Repeated problems
4. New positioning or use cases
5. Claims that still need checking
For every item, include the query, platform, publication date, a short evidence note, and source
URL. Do not treat a product or pricing claim as confirmed without a current primary source.
The results you can review in minutes instead of opening dozens of tabs.
Congrats - your indie app just gained social listening capabilities!
Save the source URLs from each brief. Give Claude the recent URL list next time and ask it to exclude
those links. This keeps repeated posts out of the report.
If nothing material changed, let the brief say so. A short empty report is more useful than a page
of routine mentions.
One query across LinkedIn, X, Reddit, Hacker News, and Google costs 6 credits when every request
succeeds. Failed requests use no credits. Start with one competitor and a few focused queries, then
remove phrases that return noise.
Lastly, I hope this guide has helped you setup social listening for your product.
SocialListeningAPI supplies current public search results. Claude writes the brief. The MCP does not provide scheduling, stored history, continuous monitoring, alerts, sentiment analysis, or reply
automation. Use Mentionkit if you want a full fledged social listening tool.
The MCP angle is interesting because it changes competitor research from a separate workflow into something founders can do inside the tool they already use for analysis.
