Howdy. Hope you're keeping well
I'm seeing more and more 'promoted' products on Product Hunt.
I'm interested to know if any Indie Hackers have tried paid advertising on Product Hunt and, if so, what the results were like? Better CTR than traditional ad platforms? ROI?
Please comment on any experiences, good or bad!
I think it depends on your product. With a service like mine for example at a minimum cost of $2k per month, I could likely make my money back very easily, and make a hefty profit on top of that. So I don't think it's fair to take one use case and make any solid predictions on how successful it would be for you. There are naturally products that appeal to the PH audience much more than others.
I just had a look at DesignJoy, love the idea and implementation. And yep, you're spot on. Being such a high-value service makes advertising on PH perfectly feasible. We're playing a volume game, with a low monthly subscription, so are at the opposite end of the spectrum.
It's probably the worst way to spend your money.
I would never pay their price. If you really wanna spend, do it on Google ads and Twitter (and perhaps tiktok, but I haven't tried it yet).
We ended up launching instead of advertising - advertising definitely would have been a waste of money! If you have any feedback I'd love to hear it: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/the-chatty-mammoth
Think I'll stick to just using PH for normal launches - I agree, it does seem outrageously expensive.
It starts at 10K USD minimum so couldn't test it.
This is quite a sum. I wonder what amount of traffic this brings in.
I didn't quite realise it's that much! Would be fascinating to see some numbers on it.
A few days back I saw someone wrote they spent 5000 dollars on Product hunt and it did not gave them much ROI.
But probably the companies which has good budget and revenue can manage to get ROI.
Not budget imo. Instead I think it's the product. ROI also depends on the product itself so its gonna be subjective. If it's a tool most PH users would use, the ROI should be high. Selling a broccoli ad on PH is gonna have terrible ROI.

Yes this article is great. I wish there were more of these kinds of writeups.
This is just the type of content I was after! Thanks for sharing.
Unsurprisingly, we opted to do a normal launch instead of advertising! Would love your feedback, if you're willing? Thanks! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/the-chatty-mammoth
