My neighbor knocked on my door a few weeks ago. She seemed nervous. She said a guy she met online was supposed to come over for dinner, and she just wanted to make sure he was who he said he was.
I am not a private investigator. I am just the guy on the block with a laptop and too much free time.
So I started searching. That is how I ended up paying for TruthFinder. And Spokeo. And BeenVerified. And a couple others I probably should not have bought.
Anyway, here is what I learned. And yeah — TruthFinder is not free. Not even close.
I see this question everywhere. People type "is TruthFinder free" into Google hoping for a yes.
The answer is no.
You can type a name into their website. You can watch their little loading animation that makes you feel like you are in a movie. But when it finishes? Paywall. Every single time.
There is no free report. No free trial that gives you anything real. You either pay or you see nothing.
I wish I had known that before I spent twenty minutes typing in names for free.
I signed up for one month. It cost me $28.05.
Some people say they get it for $25. Some say $30. Mine was $28 and change. Maybe it depends on the day. I do not know.
The annoying part? It auto-renews. I almost forgot to cancel and would have been charged again. So if you buy it, set a reminder on your phone. Seriously.
They also have a two-month plan that is cheaper per month but you pay all at once. I did not try that because I did not want to commit that much money.
Since I paid for it, I ran a bunch of searches. Myself. My neighbor. A few old coworkers I was curious about.
Here is what came back most of the time.
Criminal records. This is the main thing TruthFinder is good at. I searched for a guy I used to work with who I knew had an old DUI. TruthFinder found it. Took about two minutes.
Address history. Lots of detail here. Places the person lived, sometimes going back twenty years. This part was surprisingly accurate when I checked against what I already knew.
Possible relatives. Parents, siblings, cousins. It showed me relatives I had forgotten about. Kind of weird seeing your own family listed like that.
Phone numbers and emails. Hit or miss. Some were correct. Some were old numbers the person had not used in years.
Social media links. Public profiles only. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn. If the person has a private account, TruthFinder cannot see it. That is fine.
Court records. Civil stuff. Bankruptcies. Lawsuits. This varies by state. Some states share everything. Some share almost nothing.
Not everything was perfect. One report I ran showed an address the person had never lived at. So do not treat TruthFinder like it is always right. It pulls from public records, and public records have mistakes.
I read a bunch of reviews after using it. Wanted to see if my experience was normal.
Some people love it. They say the criminal record data is deeper than other sites. They like how the reports look.
Some people hate it. They say it is too expensive. They complain about the fake loading screen. They get frustrated trying to cancel.
One review I read said: "TruthFinder is real but it is more of a wallet-draining pay-to-play than a covert intel tool." That made me laugh because it is true.
My take? TruthFinder is not a scam. You get real data. But you also pay real money. And some of the information I found was out of date by a year or two.
I mentioned my neighbor earlier. She was nervous about that guy. I wanted to help.
I also had a weird number texting me a few months back. Someone who knew my name but would not say who they were. That got old fast.
So I started with the free sites. Google. True People Search. Whitepages. Those got me part of the way but not all the way.
Then I paid for TruthFinder. Then Spokeo. Then BeenVerified. I wanted to see which one was worth keeping.
I do not have a dramatic story. No one went to jail. No one got caught in a huge lie. I just wanted to know who was texting me and help my neighbor feel safer. That is it.
TruthFinder costs $28 a month. That is not nothing. So I looked for alternatives that cost less.
Google. I know this sounds obvious. But seriously. Type the name in quotes. Add the city. Add the phone number. You might find what you need without paying anything.
True People Search. Completely free. Shows age, relatives, past addresses. No criminal records. But for basic checks, it works fine.
Whitepages. The free version shows you if a phone number is spam. Good enough for random unknown callers.
These will not give you deep background. But they might answer your question without costing a dime.
This was the cheapest option I found. When I signed up, they had a trial for 95 cents. That is less than a dollar. Gave me access for a week. What does 🔍 Spokeo show? Dating profiles, Contact info, social media profiles, email addresses, location history. Not as deep on criminal records as TruthFinder. But for 95 cents, it felt fair. I used Spokeo for the neighbor situation. Found the guy's social media. Saw he was a real person with a normal job. That was enough.
One thing I liked about Spokeo? It flagged dating platform activity. When I searched a phone number, the report mentioned the person had profiles on dating sites. TruthFinder did not show that at all. For that specific need, Spokeo was actually better.
I used Spokeo for the neighbor situation. Found the guy's social media. Saw he was a real person with a normal job. That was enough.
Very similar to Spokeo. Their trial was $1 when I checked. After that, about $30 a month — same ballpark as TruthFinder. The interface is nicer than TruthFinder but the criminal data is not as detailed.
Good for address searches. If you have an address and want to know who lives there, Intelius works well. For name searches? It is okay. Nothing special.
Very similar to TruthFinder. Same price range. Same focus on criminal records. Between the two, I thought TruthFinder was slightly easier to use. But Instant Checkmate is fine too.
Depends on what you need.
If you just want to check someone quickly. Try the free sites first. If those do not work, Spokeo has that 95 cent trial. You will probably get what you need for less than a dollar.
If you need criminal records. TruthFinder or Instant Checkmate. Expect to pay $25 to $30. Only worth it if you have a real reason to be concerned.
If you have an address and want to know who lives there. Intelius.
If you want to spend as little as possible. Spokeo trial. Just remember to cancel before the week ends.
I learned this the hard way. No single site has everything. TruthFinder missed some social media profiles that Spokeo found. Spokeo missed a minor criminal record that TruthFinder caught. If you really need to be thorough, you might end up using two different services. That is annoying but true.
For me? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
For the random texter situation? No. That was overkill. I did not need criminal records. I just needed a name. Spokeo or even the free sites would have been fine.
For helping my neighbor? Maybe. We did not find anything bad, but knowing nothing was there gave her peace of mind. That was worth something.
Here is my honest advice. If you have a real safety concern — someone is harassing you, you are worried about a family member, you are meeting a stranger — then TruthFinder is worth considering. Twenty-eight dollars is not that much compared to peace of mind.
But if you are just curious about an old friend or a new neighbor, start with free tools. Or the cheap Spokeo trial. You will probably get your answer without spending $28.
I still have my TruthFinder subscription active right now. I will probably cancel it next week. It is useful but I do not need it every month.
A few things caught me off guard.
The auto-renew. They do not make it obvious. I almost got charged for a second month. Set a calendar reminder to cancel.
The loading screen is fake. It makes you think they are doing some deep search. They are not. It is just an animation to make the website feel more exciting. Kind of cheesy honestly.
Some information is old. I found addresses from ten years ago. Useful if you need history. Not useful if you want to know where someone lives right now.
Canceling is not instant. You have to click through a few screens. They ask why you are leaving. It is annoying but you can get through it in a minute or two.
Do not use this for hiring or renting. These sites are not FCRA compliant. That means you legally cannot use TruthFinder to screen employees or tenants. Just so you know.
I started this because my neighbor was nervous and a random number would not leave me alone. That is not a movie plot. That is just real life.
TruthFinder is not free. It costs $28 a month. It is good at criminal records. It is overkill for casual searches.
If you want to save money, try the free sites first. If those do not work, Spokeo has that cheap trial. Only pay for TruthFinder if you truly need deep background information.
And please use these tools responsibly. Do not stalk people. Do not harass anyone. Use them to protect yourself and the people you care about. That is the whole point.
My neighbor ended up going on that date. The guy was fine. Nothing happened. She thanked me for checking anyway.
That was enough for me.
