Hey guys,
Trying to grow my Twitter. At 250 right now, so nice and early.
I've noticed it's one of the best channels to increase my email list audience, but I'm trying to get better at growing it.
I know there are some brilliant folks here, who've grown like lightning and I've done quite the bit of research but it all seems very vague. E.g. "Be interested vs. being interesting."
If you've grown your audience quickly, or if you've grown it significantly, would you wanna share how you did that specifically and what others can learn from it?
I'm early in my journey but there are 2 things, I can share:
• Sharing your own material doesn't seem to work that well. If you have almost no followers, there's no one to like/retweet, which means it won't get seen.
• Summarizing insights from a book/video/blog/essay from an account that's 1 or 2 orders of magnitude bigger than yours seems to work well. E.g. You're at 200 and you share lessons, you've learned from someone that has 20K, they might retweet and like. Then their audience sees it.
• One bonus one: I've had success with stuff that doesn't scale. Helping people I admire by connecting with them via Twitter feed, DM, YT, etc. And just seeing how I can help them achieve their goals. E.g. I've been helping Gary Tan which his goal of growing his audience. He's someone I look up to and it's easier to build that relationship early. I've shared some of his work in threads, which he then likes/retweets, cuz we've built this relationship.
That's all I got. Enlighten me (and everyone reading the comments) smart people.
Edit: tons of great and actionable advice here. Thank you so much, everyone.
First you need to give people people something they want, and then you have to make them feel like they'll be missing out if they don't follow you.
There are lots of places on the internet where people are continuously refreshing the page waiting for something interesting to show up. When you're starting, it's best to find those places and go there. They could be forums like this one, reddit, Hacker News, or simply other people's tweets. Go where the crowd is until you develop your own crowd.
Also, try to reflect on what makes you follow other people. Look at what made them earn credibility in your eyes and what motivated you to click the follow button. You don't have to copy everything they do, but this can be good inspiration.
Hands down, best advice so far on this topic
This is by far the best piece of advice not only to increase twitter following but to become an influencer in any platform.
This is such a good comment man. Appreciate it, Daniel.
In a nutshell:
It's interesting you say that cuz I feel like I've been doing that with my Twitter but if you have such a little audience, it feels like shouting in the wind. If your content is good but there's no distribution, you know...
The latter 3 tips are directly implementable. Perhaps, I should just be more patient but because the growth didn't seem that strong, I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.
Good points, how do you self promote your blog etc without sounding too much. Just wanted to understand the trick.
There's nothing wrong with sharing your own stuff, just have it as a percentage of everything else, ala 80/20 rule.
example: 80% of tweets that don't promote yourself.
Perfect, thanks
Can't agree more!
I'd say "show up daily", the more the better
I had put 'daily' before editing it out to 'regularly'. 🤭
I personally show up daily, but I think it's good to encourage people that they don't have to.
Thanks Rosie!
Hi, I went from 0 to close to 1k followers in less than 2 months and here are some tips
-always give value and don't expect anything back
-use hashtags until you get at least 2-3k followers
-comment in bigger accounts post's(this helps a lot only in the beginning until you get to 700-800 followers)
-try to post different type of post until you make one that goes viral for your account and after that try to make more like that one
-when a big account starts to follow you share it with your audiance, you'll get lot of followers this way because people want a reason to follow you and this is a great one
These are only a few that came into my mind
If would appreciate a follow on twitter (@VladPasca5)
Vlad,
you have now >48K followers, clearly, your system has worked well;
could you elaborate on the value thing "always give value and don't expect anything back";
your posts cover what's valuable to you first and foremost (your personal observations, discoveries, ideas, interest points), or you are more strategic and think about what could be useful and attractive to people in mind?
Ahh yes, building a Twitter audience from scratch. The Holy Grail.
I've written a 10-step blog post about it, I think you might find it highly useful, since I'm saying something most others aren't saying: https://zlappo.com/blog/how-get-more-twitter-followers-ultimate-10-step-growth-hack-2020/.
Also, I've written a post on IH as well (got a bit of traction) on how to build your Twitter audience from scratch too, pretty much what I've stated above, but condensed version: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-to-grow-your-twitter-audience-from-scratch-b0f97c784f
Hope you find these useful, and let me know if you have any questions!

Find leverage, what can you do thats different?
Paradoxically do the same as others, sharing stats, asking profound questions. Same framework but since they're from you then in essence it's unique.
Show up and engage with others, you will go 1 month without much exposure, then folks will start to recognize you and if you're launching etc you will be put on the map with 1-2 big Tweets.
Jab Jab Jab Uppercut and be patient, always be creating leverage, share, and be consistent.
Thanks man, such good advice.
Think I'm checking off most of it. So need to be patient, persistent, and keep this list in mind.
Start with tweeting your own content even not having any followers. When they come, they'll need to see something.
Build relationships with people who are 1 step further than you. Answer, retweet, follow.
Massively follow or just reply to people who are on the same level as you. A good part of them will follow back. Just make sure they don't think you are a bot.
A lot of great points. Esp p.4. is a great reminder.
Social media networks does play an important role.. I decided to immediately use Twiter to promote all about store and bought Verified Social Media Accounts. To be honest, I was very pleased. Indeed, within a few minutes after placing the order, I received a ready-to-use account. And this service instantly provides the required login information. This is great and maybe it also will help for someone. https://get-accs.com/twitter-accounts/
Hey BobbyK7, is this genuine and legal?
I had some growth in the second half of the year (~250 -> ~1250). It wasn't the lightning growth but I worked slowly on it.
Skyrocket growing accounts are there for some reason, and in my opinion their paths can't be reproduced easily.
Anyway, I'm running a newsletter course for small-sized Twitter accounts that will help them reach 500 followers. It's a long running game, don't expect wonders, but it will help you steer your direction, and define your twitter presence

Awesome. Just subscribed ✌️
Thanks! I'll check it out.
" Summarizing insights from a book/video/blog/essay from an account that's 1 or 2 orders of magnitude bigger than yours seems to work well. E.g. You're at 200 and you share lessons, you've learned from someone that has 20K, they might retweet and like. Then their audience sees it." This is really good tip. It makes sense. The audience will participate because there is intimacy "Twitter level intimacy" and you will get some viewership because you wont be drowned out.
I was wondered if I could just hire a snarky person - or better yet how to recruit the snarky person in your circle to post on your behalf. Twitter is goof for those snarky posters.
Has anyone built a snarkbot..
