Twitter vs Instagram - subscriber rate

Hi Newsletter Crew,

I've learned alot about social media in the past months. When your a standard user, you believe you know exactly how these platforms work... the truth is we don't.

It's a combination of trial, error and pure luck.

I started an Instagram and twitter account simultaneously over 2 months ago. I quickly realised the main focus of these accounts was to drive traffic to my email list. Here's how it worked out;

Instagram;
Feed posts - 144 (I post every single day)
Stories - 2/3 images on stories each day
Followers - 1368 / Following - 600

Where did the followers come from?
Mainly from engaging with other accounts (liking and commenting on their posts). A trickle have come from my posts being shared and hashtags. I decided not to try to please the algorithm, it's a minefield.

How did these convert to newsletter subs?
Every day I send a DM to everyone who has followed in past 24hrs. This is a copy and paste note simply asking them to check out the newsletter and to let me know what they think of it.
Average 20 followers per day converted to 3/4 email subs = 15 to 20% return rate.

Twitter;
Many random posts trying to get something to stick
Followers - 405 / Following 154

Where did the followers come from?
Same as instagram. Engaging with other accounts. Would guess 5-10% organic.

How did these convert to newsletter subs?
The copy and paste note method doesn't really work on twitter. Twitter works out very quickly what you're doing, and stops you from messaging for the rest of the day. I would estimate that from the 200 subscribers i have, 9 or 10 have come from Twitter.

Overall, roughly 90% of my list has come from Instagram, 4/5% from Twitter, and the remaining percentage from newsletter directory sites.

The most interesting stat I uncovered on my substack dashboard; 24 viewers from Indie Hackers, only 1 sign up :(

Many Thanks,
