I’ve created a Google Sheet that lets you enter in a few bits of data about the problem that you are attempting to solve then gives you a score on if the problem you are trying to solve is big enough.

It spits out a visualization based on the magnitude of the problem in key areas:

  1. Popularity: How many have the problem?
  2. Growth: How fast is this problem growing?
  3. Urgency: When is this problem relevant?
  4. Cost: How expensive is this problem to solve?
  5. Mandatory: Is it now necessary to solve (i.e. new law)
  6. Frequency: Is this a problem that needs solving very often?

Would anyone be interested in beta-testing with their own startup idea?

I would like to add other examples so that you can eventually compare your startup score to others.

If you are working on a project lmk in the comments below and I can help you get your own score and add it to the master sheet.

Here's the sheet--feel free to copy and try it yourself: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1og305lg4hzImD-AjeG5ur4lKZGMBRg_KQw6kXLNQQmw/edit?usp=sharing

Not bad. I like the dials and such. I didn't realize what I was looking at was a sort of legend until after clicking and seeing the IF function ("1m" needs to be entered exactly as 1m).

    Good stuff Marc :)
