Use shared geography to land your first 5 users

I have seen a few questions about getting your first 5-10 users. Although this activity isn't really scalable, it usually pays off for me.

When I start working with SAAS companies, the founder is usually only comfortable with cold email outreach. That's totally fair. The thought of "selling" seems lame.

But IMO the best way to land your first users it to call potential users that are within an hour's driving distance. You're basically using your shared geography as a connection in the same way you would a mutual friend.

Here's what I do to land my first few users:

  1. Draw a driving radius around your location
  2. Make a simple spreadsheet with potential customers that are in that radius
  3. Write a very simple script like:
"Hey there, I'm the founder of X company. I'm over at Y location (this location needs to be immediately recognizable by the potential user)

I'm working on a new software that helps Z industry/job and would love some feedback. I saw that your business is really influential in our city and I think you might be able to help me.

Would it be possible to schedule a feedback meeting with you at your convenience? I'm not trying to sell you anything - I just want your feedback"
4. Start calling each business and writing your feedback.
5. If anyone agrees to schedule the meeting, schedule the meeting while you're on the phone with them.

I hope this is helpful!
