"Used by" section on a landing page

Hi everyone!

A lot of landing pages of upcoming products are featuring a social proof section with a list of logos of famous companies that are allegedly using their services. I'm sure you've seen it more than once and possibly you even have it on your own landing page.

While most of the time this is believable occasionally I stumble upon ones that look like smoke and mirrors. This makes me wonder - what is the usual playbook for using those logos? Looking for a little bit of advice on this:

  1. At which point would you decide to put other company's logo on your landing page in the "used by" section? After they sign up, use the product regularly, when they become a paying customer or maybe at some other point?

  2. I would imagine that this process should include reaching out to the other company's contact (maybe a branding department?) and asking for permission. Is that what usually happens? If you have a similar section, what was the process for you?

All the best and keep on hacking! 🖖

Most companies will have their logos trademarked as IP and you would have to at the minimum get their written consent to use it on your site. I know for a fact that some will ask something in return because they know how valuable it is to you and your credibility... So things like rebates or extra work / support. So to answer your questions : do it once you know for a fact that that company uses your product and you have their blessing to use their logo.

Good question, I suspect a lot of people simply check the domains within the emails of their users and if one of them is from company X, that technically makes the product being used by the company.

I'm not sure if there is a standard procedure here and while your scenario 2 would be ideal I'd suspect it rarely happens that way. Curious as well since I've also seen some disclaimers in other contexts when using company logos without being directly affiliated with the company (like in the case of unofficial extensions etc.), maybe some others can chime in.
