Vitess and how Youtube scaled MySQL

I've always been curious about databases, and lately, I've been playing with Vitess. What DB are you using and why?

I know that PlanetScale is running Vitess. Youtube built it for its own scale, and some big companies are using it too.

This feels like a separate beast which helps a lot when you gets to sharding database.
