Wading into murky waters... which style of Markdown do you favor?

There's two ways I've seen to make a Markdown editor.

Option A (Overlay): Show all the markdown characters, just superimpose the styling on top

Option B (Inline): Replace the markdown characters for a clean, rich text editor look

Which do you prefer?
