Wow, "the rug pull," there's no better way to put it. Beyond knowing your acquirer and making sure they understand the level of investment needed from them post-acquisition, I think it's key to make your expectations clear and manage theirs. Gauge their reaction to a range of different possible scenarios - how would they react if X-unfavourable-outcome happened? Would they support you the way you need?
Right, but I can see how, from their perspective, they realized this could be a risky investment. I can't blame them for pulling out after seeing low sales, it makes sense.
Yes, but it's not like they shouldn't have foreseen it could be a potential outcome. What they should have done is be prepared to invest/come up with a Plan B to help the startup they acquired increase sales. Not pull out the second they hear a hiccup.
