Watching users use your landing page is the best landing page feedback

If someone gives you suggestions to improve your landing page it's easy to dismiss them or procrastinate on them.

But if you can literally see that something is causing friction for your customers, it gives you some real motivation!

I installed hotjar.com today for watchlimits.com and it literally opened my eyes.

I don't get that much traffic to my landing page, but I managed to get a couple of recordings pretty quickly. Watching them was painful, but crazy motivating.

Some early insights:

  • mobile users getting lost quickly and not getting to the "on mobile" form lower on the landing - I moved it up and I'm only showing it for small screen widths
  • user confused at Install / Sign up / Sign in menu -> I changed it to "Install / Already installed?" to make steps clearer
  • user stuck on the pricing section at the bottom -> are users concerned about pricing?
  • user scrolling in text while using a very big screen resolution (font too small on big screens?)

I shipped most of the improvements already.

I thought that tools for user behavior monitoring would be hard to configure or use. But it's not only free, but also so easy to set up, it literally took me 5 minutes.

Do yourself a favor, install such tool (e.g. hotjar) and get some real user feedback.
