WDYT?: A service that automatically sends gifts to people you care about

Where are your gifts coming from? Different retailers?

First reaction is that it's a neat idea.

Second reaction was that it might not connect with people giving gifts to friends or family because there's nothing thoughtful about auto gift-giving. When you give a gift to a friend or family member, it's about being truly thoughtful (most of the time).

Even if the recipient doesn't know, the sender will, and will eventually they'll feel bad that they didn't take the time to pick out a gift for someone they love.

But, the service could work for companies looking to give customers, employees, suppliers, or partners gifts.

Wow interesting idea. I love the ease of it and considering the difficulty of using the postal service to post a gift (getting a gift, going to post office, packaging, sending it).. this would be so much simpler. I would love to set one day a year to simply go through my close friends lists and send something small and meaningful to supply them. Loved the example of the high school friend - that's exactly who I think it would be perfect for.
My wishes - worldwide shipping, possibility to change address, maybe a notification a week in advance before shipping to ensure that the address is correct; no need to worry about customs taxation for the receiver..
Budget: 20 euros.
Currently solving this issue by: using other gift delivery services that are more country specific such as https://www.godisboxen.se/

I like the idea as well.

I'd love a product where I can specify things specific people in my life like. Every time I learn about some new hobby or interest, I would input it into the service. Maybe I'll also add birthdays and other important dates. And then when this date is close, the service reminds me of it and gives me a choice of three gift ideas. Maybe I can reshuffle / get new ideas if I don't like them.

I like it! I don't like gift shopping. I feel like I suck at it and I end up gifting weird items. Would be great to select from a curated list or "groupings" like candles, flowers, serving dishes, etc.

Also, I feel like I'll get bonus points for remembering everyone's birthday! Haha. This would be great to have pre-set for holidays as well.

I definitely can think of a couple people that would appreciate this service.

My one note would be to make sure it's "white labeled". Wouldn't want the receiver to know its from x company rather than me.

I think this could be helpful for not that close friends, but close friends and family, I would not use that. For example, I would never auto gift my daughter her bday present, I have to physically take her and let her choose it. For close friends, I would need to choose something specifically and I would be only comfortable doing so myself. But let's say my work colleague which I am not that close to, I could do that. Overall, I feel it's a good idea but needs some tweaking, what would that be you say? I have no idea :D

Funny thing is, I saw some project here on IH that was almost exactly the same. Sending gifts automatically to people you define for occasions you define. You just set a budget and that's it.

Another interesting thing is that I'm building an app that could be complementary to such a service (see post on my profile). I'm also looking for a co-founder :)

Final thought regarding @iammike's comment is: I feel the same, but you could make it work for family. Maybe the user can make lists of things he needs as presents for certain occasions for certain people. The service will procure the items, pre-package them as gifts, and send them to the user. Maybe the user can enter some special preferences of the person who will receive the gift and the service could somehow try to get a more personalized version of the item (for example if the person who receives the gift likes a certain color, a certain food, has a certain hobby and so forth). The user will receive a personalized version of the gift he wanted and personally delivers the gift. I also think the personal delivery is key, so if you can build something helpful around that, the service might stick.

Would be nice to have a total autopilot mode too so I don't have to choose the gifts, perhaps have product groups or ranges people can choose from?

I would 100% add my top tier clients list to this and have you guys distribute gifts to them at certain times.

I think in this case, the part of the idea that you most need to validate is whether you can get in front of people who want to use this. There's no single group of people that have a community for wanting to give gifts automatically - nobody hangs out on internet forums dedicated to this. So the key question is whether you can tell yourself a story about who wants this, when they think they need this, and can you get in front of them at this moment?
