We built a time tracker that goes beyond just counting hours — here’s what we learned

We’ve been working on Toolscase Time Tracker, and one of the questions we had from the beginning was: how much information does a team actually need from a time-tracking tool?

Simply recording that someone worked for eight hours doesn’t necessarily explain how that time was spent.

So we built the product around both time tracking and understanding work activity.

The current version includes:

Time tracking
Screenshots
Activity monitoring
App and URL tracking
Productivity reports
AI-generated work summaries
Support for teams of different sizes

The interesting challenge has been balancing visibility with usability.

Managers may need enough information to understand where working time is going, while employees need a system that doesn’t turn normal work into unnecessary administration.

Reporting has also been an important part of the problem. Collecting activity data is relatively straightforward; turning it into something useful without overwhelming people with information is much harder.

We’re continuing to improve that balance as we develop the product.
