We built an AI web clipper for Notion

A couple of months ago me and my partner released an ai browser extension as free beta. Since then, we see some success, we make mistakes, feel overwhelmed and grateful for the ride so far. Because there is so much that we have to learn, we wanted to share this journey with you.

Here is why

  • writing the story down for others helps me to reflect on the project
  • I’d love to connect to others with similar paths and best practices
  • this community has given me so much already that I want to give back and share what I learned so far

Our product: A web clipper for Notion

Notix is a web clipper for Notion, that aims to improve the Notion experience for researchers, content creators and other people, who need a reliable way to organize information in one place.

We developed Notix because we felt the existing solutions were either lacking features or were unreliable. We also wanted to add AI to the mix.

Here are the features that make Notix unique:

  • Page editing directly within extension: You get a similarish editing experience as in Notion directly in the extension, so you don’t have to leave the current context.
  • AI: Summarize, translate, find tasks, explain content from a website and store it directly inside of Notion.
  • Screenshots and Videos: Capture and insert visual content into a page.
  • Predefined Blocks: Save time by easily inserting predefined blocks to streamline your workflow

Take a look at our landing page, if you want to learn more: notix.so

I am aware, that we will have to streamline the features and UI in the future. But before going into changing stuff according to us - I think it is better to let early adopters test the tool and tell us how they would like to change it.

Another feature: Should it stay or should it go?

We recently added another feature, that is so different it could (probably should) be it’s own extension: users can record every single action on a computer to document a process. Because it is connected to Notion, this could help built help desks and onboarding areas within Notion without any frictions. It is similar to services like tango.us and we really like it. But we are debating if it would be smarter to keep our tool minimalistic and simple - and therefore split it from the extension and make it it’s own tool. If you have any thoughts on this, I am happy to hear.

What’s up right now

Currently we are trying to get our first test users to sign up for our free beta. Since the beta is free and Notion and it’s web clippers are popular, it is going quite okay – we only posted in a few Reddits so far and see about 30 weekly sign-ups.

What’s bothering us

Since we are just two people the biggest challenge is pick the tasks with the biggest impact.

We still haven’t decided if we unship the new recording feature for simplicity and we have no clear idea about the best next steps in terms of marketing. I don’t want to exploit Reddit too much, and I think I posted it in threads where it fits and where people were genuinely looking for tools like ours.

I was thinking about writing to bloggers so that they can mention us in their articles. But I am afraid people see an unfinished product and refuse us forever altogether.

Another strategy could be classical SEO: Should we write SEO articles for keywords like notion, notion web clipper, extensions etc.? Again, here I would write bloggers for backlinks.

Have you gone through this and got some best practices?

If you have any advice I would be delighted to hear from you.

In any case, we are eager to improve the tool and get it into the hands of enthusiasts and early adopters. I will keep you posted in this community!

Until next time!

    Patrick, a couple of things.

Yes, that new feature should go. It's substantially different enough to be its own tool. Also, it's something that you'll need to build out even more, in order to compete in that particular market.

Since this is essentially a Notion plugin, you need to get deeply involved in the Notion community. The goal is to become a Notion resource — in that way you'll gain visibility for your product.

Think about pain points that your ideal customer has and write about those on your website. Start with bottom of funnel content and work your way upwards.

Thanks for your advice. I feel more confident in dropping the new feature and it will go.

I agree on becoming a Notion resource but I am still not sure about the type of content for the start.
About your suggestion on blog posts: I wrote one for "notion web clipper" just to get a shot at ranking. When you speak of "bottom" you mean a help center, tutorials for our tool or rather how-tos on how to research with Notion (painpoint)?

      Thanks again!

Bottom of funnel is the last step before someone converts to a customer. So content that helps them make that decision is what I would focus on.

Here's a simple scoring system to prioritize what to talk about:

3 points if my tool is indispensable with regards to what I 'm talking about.
2 points if my tool is of some help within the context of the topic.
1 point if my tool offers limited value.
0 points if I'm talking about something that my tool can't help them with.
