We built Bearing Gifts to help people find great gift ideas

This past week, my brother and I released Bearing Gifts. The idea is simple, help people find great gifts for friends and family.

Currently available in Australia. We'll be looking at launching in other regions real soon!

You can find the app here: https://bearinggifts.com.au

If you could spare 5 minutes, we'd really appreciate some feedback/design/UX tips.

Cheers and good luck with your projects fellow Indie Hacker! :)

I love the idea and the bear is so awesome ! :)
Some ideas from desktop point of view:

    • Menu items can have a bit bigger font and some hover effect (border / background-color).
    • You can use more warm yellow color and give yellow-shade color for the CTA hover: http://prntscr.com/pb4sgt
    • Don't really like how arrows overlap the pictures in the product carousel (try reduce carousel width and add space between products and arrows).
    • "Bearing Gifts delivers" text paragraph can have smaller font or bigger width.
    • Try align Active Wear , Underwear And Socks, Shorts ... links to the left (using same 2 columns design)
    • Footer can have yellow background (same as header image).

Good Luck and have a great day !

      Hey Romarto :)
Thanks for the great feedback, we'll definitely be looking to implement some of these!

    Looks great!

Found another small bug for you, easy fix: When showing results from the Gift Wizard, the filter tags have a higher z-index than the "Gift hunting features explained" pop up message, so on mobile with enough tags, they float over the message.

Thank you for the feedback! :)

When there's many tags selected, the tag section on the browse page actually isn't looking too great in general (beside the z-index issue), we'll give this some thought

    Love the branding and design!

I clicked around a bit (on my Pixel 1) and spotted 2 bugs.

    • when I selected the adult checkbox from the drop down the drop-down just hovered on the page and wouldn't accept my input . I had to deselect and try again. Eventually worked.
    • I got to zero results (was not trying to but actually only took 1 thumbs down because I stupidly picked beer gifts and down voted for alcohol 😁). Anyway, I tried to clear the alcohol filter but it wouldn't go away. Page just kept reloading and saying no results.

On the UX, I thought the thumbs up/down was a nice idea but my expectation was that it would be "smart" and simply re-filter/re-order the products right away. When the modal popped up asking for more input I was surprised and thought I had clicked the wrong thing. It made sense on the second attempt but didn't love this bit. Even if the back end is very simple it would try using some heuristic to filter rather that asking me exactly what DB field I don't like, probably I just have a vague sense of "this isn't the right gift".

Anyway, congrats on a great looking site and a nice idea for a business.

    Best of luck 💪

      Hey :)

Thanks so much for taking the time and for the detailed feedback! It's super helpful

Seems like there is an issue with removing filters under certain conditions, I'll get that patched up

The thumbs down feature could be reworked quite easily to remove similar gifts to the one that was disliked. We'll definitely relook at this as we have had some similar feedback

    I like Barry :D

and I like the design of the webpage. I also think that the idea is quite interesting. Very often I ask myself what gifts to buy for different people.

I would improve on the security of your site. You use mixed content resulting in a broken https connection, which people perceive as a dangerous looking icon in their browser bar. Improving on this would make the site look much more professional.

    Best wishes

      Hey :)

      Thank you for the feedback!

I fixed up the mixed content issue. Thanks for the heads up that was super helpful.
