We got our 2nd paying customer within the first month of starting up :)

As some of you know, a handful of us from sales and marketing backgrounds quit our jobs to start this B2B sales consulting and software company.

We decided to give out free 1 hour sales consulting calls to whoever needed help in selling their products/services. Appointments poured in and we were able to help almost everyone who came on the call. We learnt a lot and are continuing to learn as I write this.

After about 40 free calls, we are now at 2 confirmed paying customers. And we are also working on an intuitive software to help make sales better, from all the experience in sales. Looking forward to how things could turn out :)

So, our method for starting this company has been essentially the "lean startup" methodology of getting out into the marketplace and finding out what people need vs. showing up with a bucket of stuff and trying to throw it at them. We stayed very fluid, and asked for precisely $0 over the course of 40 calls. Our first two major clients came back to US looking for more after the value we provided them. We've also done a handful of smaller projects too that have trickled in.

The lesson is to get the hell out there and talk with your target market. Find out who they are and where they hang out, and just go start conversations. Offer value. Be real. Be kind. Be helpful. Good things will come of it, and you'll learn a heck of a lot in the process.
