We just gave away 5% of our gross revenue in 2021

For the 2nd year in a row, @amyhoy & I donated 5% of gross revenue from our popular business course 30x500 to programs & resources who support or empower people most impacted by structural/institutional racism.

Here’s where this year’s money went:

1 - https://www.resilientcoders.org to empower the next generation of Black creators & entrepreneurs
2 - https://www.nativestartup.org to support Native American small businesses and the tribes they benefit
3 - https://jamaabirthvillage.org to spread opportunity in its most primal form, life and family
4 - We also made a significant donation to a boots-on-the-ground org doing COVID relief in India when things were especially awful back in the spring, and doubled our donation through matching on Twitter.

This round of donations was a valuable exercise in thinking about where money has direct impact.

And the 5% contribution is built into our business model, so we continue looking for people and organizations to include in our giving roster.

Though we sign the checks, this IS a collective effort. Roughly $100 for every person who joins 30x500 to learn how to be create a product biz of their own is now being donated to an org or cause that is dedicated to some aspect of structural inequity. However big or small.

As I said last year when we started this giving program, this is not the end of the work. Not even close. But we are very proud that we’re able to do something meaningful, and will keep learning so we can do more next year.

And honestly, writing four big checks to amazing orgs that do important work feels like a win during a time when wins are hard to come by!

Also I’d love to know about other small biz owners who’ve baked some form of charitable giving into their business model so if that’s you, say hi!

(My Twitter DMs are open if you’d prefer to be more private about it)

Or if you WANT to do something like this, and have questions, ask away.

Happy holidays, y'all.

IMO the only good reason to gather power or resources to give them away to people who don’t have it yet.
