Hey Betty! So I would definitely work on the copy around the “subscribe” button, like make it super clear what the user is signing up for. Right now, landing on the page, it’s hard to tell what the newsletter is centered around. I see your copy in the link you shared, here on IH, but if I’m landing on the page from a direct link, the user needs a solid summary of what the content will be about.
Also: know your audience. Be as specific as you can regarding the subject, and expand from there, either by expanding the subject of this newsletter, or starting another one (it doesn’t take much to make a new one!). For example, in the link preview above, it mentions “entrepreneurs and creative freelancers”. Since these two audiences have such different requirements, desires, goals, etc. it may be worth making one newsletter for each audience. I’d start with just one, though, and focus on that.
I would also check out other well-regarded newsletters and other email communications to see what works and what doesn’t. I really like Trello, their emails are killer. And full disclosure, I work for Hacker Noon, but Natasha’s emails at hackernoon.com are seriously some of the best I’ve ever seen. For an example, you can sign up on the site and we’ll send you a welcome email. :) I may be biased, though. If you’d rather not sign up, I’d be happy to forward a couple examples.
Finally: have fun with it! 😁 Once you’ve built a rapport with your audience using your knowledge and expertise in the field, send a fun message every now and then! Send out special newsletters for holidays (especially April Fool’s Day), make relevant jokes, include gifs and memes...entertain your audience, and it’ll pay off, I promise.
I know these tips are more about content, but the simple fact of the matter is: better content == more subscribers. People share good newsletters. They tweet about them (I have!). They talk about them with teammates. That’s not to say marketing your newsletter is a bad idea — you definitely should — but content is king. Without quality content, you can’t have the rest. In other words, if you build a newsletter with high-quality content, I can tell you a million ways you can potentially increase subscriptions, but without good content, it’s nearly impossible to build a subscriber base.
