We need to track user behaviour and usage for a mobile app - what software would you recommend?
by
Neil Sheth
There are a bunch of metrics we're looking to track for an app - any recommendations?
Start with Google Analytics, aka Firebase Analytics. It is free and covers all the basics for getting started. However, plan to switch to Segment.io as soon as you gain traction.
While implementing Firebase Analytics, try to create a wrapper around it. And call this wrapper from your code. This can be as simple as a singleton. This way, you do not have to change your code when you switch to Segment.
What Segment does for you is provide you the opportunity to pipe your data to as many destinations as you want, including Firebase Analytics and some of the ones mentioned here.
In my 9-5, I work with Segment; however, in my indie project, I use Firebase Analytics.
+1 for Firebase Analytics. Really powerful and easy to setup. You can stretch the free plan a long way.
Great suggestion for the abstraction.
Ah ok - this is super helpful, thanks dude!
Have you looked into Mixpanel and Amplitude or similar analytics software?
Thanks I'll check those out. Wondering if Google Analytics does a good enough job?
I believe you need an events tracking software while I assume Google Analytics tracks pages and sessions.
Mixpanel, is best.
Do consider https://clarity.microsoft.com Clarity By Microsoft. Great value for free while other alternative will cost you hundreds. We are using it for our startup at the moment.
Hello Neil,
I'm Faruk, the founder of MonitUp.com.
MonitUp increases the productivity of teams and freelancers.
Features :
• It keeps track of login and exit times and how many hours the computer is on the lock screen during the day.
• It keeps track of how much time the user spends in which application.
• It keeps track of which websites you visit.
• You can define applications as efficient, inefficient and neutral. In this way, you can track which user is spending the day with how efficiently.
• It takes a screenshot every 5 minutes if you wish.
• It keeps the ram, cpu, hdd usage logs of the computers.
• You can determine the working hours of your company. The system will only operate between these hours.
You can access the new features we plan to add in the near future here: https://monitup.frill.co/roadmap
If you want to reach me: faruk@monitup.com
Try usermaven.com as it tracks all the events automatically.
I think you should list all the app metrics that you want to track. Here are some metrics for reference: (do list those that are important for your own app)
App Metrics for User Acquisition
-Downloads
-Total Users
-New Users
-Daily Uninstalls
App Metrics for User Engagement
-Activations
-Time Spent
-Session Interval
-Average Session Length
-DAU & WAU & MAU
-Total Active Days Per User(TAD)
-App Launch Retention Cohorts
-Retention
-Churn
App Metrics for Revenue
-Conversion Rates
-Revenue
-Average Revenue Per User (ARPU)
-Average Revenue Per Paying User (ARPPU)
-Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)
-Return on Investment (ROI)
-Lifetime value (LTV)
App Metrics for App Performance
-App Load Time
-User Satisfaction
-User Ratings
-Net Promoter Score(NPS)
As for event tracking, our appflow.ai supports custom event tracking for apps. You can also choose the events you want to track and build a funnel to see the conversion rate between layers of events. Hope we can help you!
Thanks, that's super useful!
Amplitude is great and they are pretty generous with giving out a free year of the premium tier: https://amplitude.com/startups
Cheers, I'll check them out!
I second Amplitude, it fits most needs out of the box and if you're not building a consumer app the free tier might be enough for a long long time!
Im using Heap with pretty good results. It allows you yo see recorded user sessions
What are the metrics that are important to you?
That'll drive the best service to track usage.
Listing those might helps others provide you with a solution.
Google Analytics is OK... but much to be desired there from my perspective.
However, it's free, and will get you something, at least until you find a better alternative.
Yeah my gut feeling is telling me not to go with GA and go for something more robust! Cheers
