We published an honest competitor comparison — including our own weaknesses

Most "best crypto portfolio tracker" articles are thinly veiled affiliate roundups. Every tool gets 4.5 stars and a referral link.

We took a different approach: we compared CoinTracker, Koinly, CoinStats, and HODLTrack and listed the real weaknesses of each — including our own.

HODLTrack's honest weaknesses in the post:

No automatic transaction import (manual-only by design)
No tax document generation
No DeFi wallet integration
Newer product with a smaller community
The logic: if someone reads a comparison and HODLTrack wins despite us listing four genuine downsides, that reader trusts the conclusion and is far more likely to convert than someone who only saw a promotional writeup.

Comparison posts also target the highest-intent search traffic that exists — people searching "CoinTracker alternative" or "Koinly vs CoinStats" are actively shopping. They're not doing research for fun.

Curious whether anyone else has done honest competitor comparisons and whether the SEO + conversion results justified the discomfort of listing your own flaws publicly.

Listing your weaknesses is most useful when they are decision criteria rather than generic humility. I’d add a clear “best for / not for” row and tie claims to measurable limits such as supported exchanges, tax workflows, refresh speed, and pricing. That gives readers permission to choose a competitor when the fit is wrong, which makes your remaining recommendation more credible. SEO impact may lag, but clicks from this page into pricing or signup should give you an earlier conversion signal.
