We spent 3 months building a digital wardrobe app. We just threw it all away.

Hey Indie Hackers,

We're a small team building in the AI x Fashion space, and today marks Day 1 of our Build in Public journey. We're starting with the story of a painful, but we hope, pivotal decision, and we'd love to get your honest take.

The "Smart" Idea We Started With

Our initial concept was logical, almost textbook-perfect: an AI-powered digital wardrobe. The plan was simple: use image recognition to digitize your entire closet, then offer smart categorization and outfit recommendations. It makes perfect sense on paper, right? We thought so too.

The Wall We Hit: The Human Problem

We spent three months building and, more importantly, talking to potential users. And that's when we hit a wall. A hard, psychological wall.

We discovered a brutal truth: Nobody enjoys managing their clothes.

The act of cataloging, tagging, and organizing is a chore. It’s anti-human. No matter how efficient we made our tool, we were just optimizing a task that people fundamentally hate doing.

The real user pain wasn't "my closet is messy." It was, "I'm standing in front of my closet, and my mind is a complete blank." It's a feeling of creative paralysis, a quiet desperation that no amount of smart tagging can solve.

The Pivot: From "Janitor" to "Muse"

So, we made a tough call. We decided to pivot the entire core of our product. We're firing ourselves from the job of "Wardrobe Janitor" and applying for the role of "Inspiration Generator."

Our new direction is AI-powered Fashion Photoshoots.

Here's the new flow: A user provides a photo of herself and images of her clothes. Our AI (fine-tuned Stable Diffusion models under the hood) then generates high-quality, magazine-style photoshoots of her wearing various creative combinations.

Why We Believe This Is the Right Move:

Result-Oriented: We're skipping the tedious middle step (organizing) and delivering the end result people actually crave (seeing amazing outfit ideas, visually).

Zero Decision Fatigue: A stunning visual output is 100x more intuitive and inspiring than a text-based recommendation.

The "Wow" Factor: AI can generate unexpected, creative pairings that a human might never consider, injecting a sense of surprise and delight.

Roast Us / Help Us Think:

This is where we need you. We're still incredibly early, and every piece of feedback is gold.

The Pivot Itself: Does this shift from "management" to "creation" make sense to you? Or are we just drinking our own Kool-Aid and ignoring a real need for organization tools?

The "Holy Grail" Tech Challenge: We know generating a consistent face (user's own face) combined with specific clothing items (user's own clothes) is a massive technical challenge. Consistency is king, and it's a deep rabbit hole. Have you seen any elegant solutions or have interesting ideas on how to approach this? (e.g., multi-stage pipelines, clever use of LoRA/ControlNet, etc.)

The Business Model Question: In your opinion, is an "experience-based" product like this easier or harder to monetize than a "utility-based" tool? We're leaning towards a subscription model for a steady stream of "AI photoshoots," but are there other paths we're missing?

Thanks for reading this far. We're excited, a little terrified, and ready to build this thing out in the open with you all. Let us have it!
