We ran into a wall, and I wanted to share the pivot because the data we found was pretty brutal.
We built Babelbeez, a browser-native voice agent. The tech is solid (OpenAI Realtime, WebRTC, low latency), but we realized we were trying to sell "The Future" to business owners who just wanted to get home for dinner.
The "AI" Trap We audited the WordPress Plugin Directory to see what people were actually searching for. The results were binary:
The Graveyard: Keywords like "Voice AI" or "Voice Chatbot" averaged <10 active installs per plugin.
The Goldmine: Keywords like "Click to Call" or "Call Button" have 200,000+ active installs.
The Insight Nobody wakes up thinking, "I need a neural network." But everyone wakes up thinking, "I hate when my phone rings while I'm eating."
We were trying to sell a "Voice Agent" (solution looking for a problem). The market wanted a "Call Button" (a specific solution to a pain point).
The Pivot We aren't scrapping the tech, but we are scrapping the narrative. We are no longer selling "AI." We are selling "The Call Button That Answers Itself".
Old Pitch: "Deploy a sovereign AI agent." (Too scary, too complex).
New Pitch: "Replace your 'Call Now' button with this. It talks to customers so you don't have to." (Utility).
We’re attacking the incumbents by highlighting their biggest flaw: standard click-to-call buttons make the business owner’s phone ring. Ours handles the call in the browser.
The Lesson If you're building in AI right now, stop selling the "Magic." Sell the "Boring." We learned that our target customer doesn't want a robot friend; they want a tool that subtracts work from their day.
Curious if anyone else here has had to "dumb down" their marketing to actually find product-market fit?
