Web agencies — who owns ADA compliance after a site goes live?

Simple question I keep running into while researching accessibility compliance for web agencies.

When you deliver a client website and six months later the client gets flagged for missing alt text on images — whose problem is it?

Is it:

  • The agency who built it
  • The client who manages content
  • Nobody until a lawyer shows up

Asking because the answer seems to vary wildly depending on who you talk to and whether anything was in the contract.

If you run or work at a web agency, what's your experience?
