Web3: Getting paid to break into the field
Trying to break into web3 can be intimidating! It is confusing, projects ask for years of experience, and a lot of it is unpaid work. You sign into 30 Discords and then never do anything with them.
I have recently found a better onramp to explore web3.
I am part of a DAO that is a real world Freelancing agency called BrainTrust.
They have conventional gigs with Fortune 500 companies. Mostly 40 hrs/week, but some project based work and have processed $67 million USD in project revenue. Freelancers keep 100% of their billing rate.
But... They also have a ton of web3 opportunities and many of them are open to first timers as long as you have deep React/Vue skills or deep Go/Rust skills.
BrainTrust has launched a whole focus on helping developers migrate to web3 and learn the skills you need.
There are three main channels for web3:
- Web3 jobs in their job boards (website after talent onboarding)
- Grants to work on BrainTrust itself (Discord)
- Other activities announced in Discord (un-paid)
Many of these paid gigs ask for years of experience, but also say "if you don't have the experience, apply anyways as we are interested in diversity". The CEOs of many of these DAOs understand that there is a talent shortage and want to draw from a large and more diverse pool.
What type of work is web3? Basically what you are already doing plus one or two missing technologies. I think people underestimate how much their current skillset is needed by web3 projects.
- Frontend is using web3.js the Etherium API, listening to events from Solidity contractrs, Typescript, Unity and doing 3D stuff on the web, Animation in CSS, Figma, Tailwind, etc
- Backend is writing Solidity contracts, SKALE contracts, IPFS, and usual cloud infrastrcture, kubernetes, distributed systems architecture, Go/Rust/C++/Python/Kotlin/etc
When I say unpaid, I mean in traditional currency like USD. You often earn tokens for activities. But in my mind, that is like working for a startup for equity only.
