Hello IH,
Yesterday I finished working on a webring. A webring is essentially a network of websites connected to each other through a simple link system. It allows the visitors of a site to discover more interesting websites. and the owner of the sites to get more visitors. They used to be very popular in the 90s, but their usage almost vanished in the years after with more powerful search engines and social networks.
Yet, webrings gives people a chance to discover things they didn't even know they wanted to see. The serendipity they bring is similar to when we explore a city and find neighborhood we didn't know about. I've seen a few webrings appearing in the last few month, and it seems like the trend is picking up again.
I wanted to create one for https://midnight.pub - a small online community - with the hope of knitting everyone's home page together. Since webrings requires participants to add links to their homepage, I think it can be an interesting strategy to improve SEO and drive more quality traffic.
Find out more about The Midnight Webring.
What do you think about webrings? What webring are you a part of?
I saw sidebar launching theirs, pretty interesting actually.
Are there any reasonable statistics on how many people walk a web ring?
Interesting. Is this like StumbleUpon? (I've just googled SU...they are now part of Mix.com)
It does have similarities with StumbleUpon. I think the main difference is that on webrings, participants actively add links to the next/previous website of the webring within their websites directly.
