Week 1 Update – I Built AuthenticImage & Somehow 145 People Used It Already

Hey Indie Hackers!

Last week I quietly launched a tiny tool called AuthenticImage — a simple way to check whether an image is AI-generated, edited, or manipulated.

I built it because I kept getting fooled by hyper-realistic AI photos and wanted a quick “Is this real?” checker. No signup, no fluff — just upload a photo and get a verdict.

✅ What Happened This Week
Without any promotion, the tool somehow got:

145 unique users
From 12+ countries

Uploading all kinds of images — AI art, product photos, real photos, memes, profile pictures, even screenshots

I genuinely didn’t expect real usage. It was supposed to be a tiny side experiment, but now people are DM’ing me saying they’re using it for:

verifying content before posting
checking photos in news articles
checking marketplace/product authenticity
validating images in research
catching AI-generated profile pics
Unexpected, but super motivating.

🧪 What the Tool Does Right Now
Detects AI-generated images
Detects manipulated/edited photos
Flags unsafe or suspicious visual content
Gives a confidence score + explanation
Works instantly, no login required
It’s intentionally simple.

💡 What I Learned From Users
Journalists really want this
Creators want a “prove it’s not AI” badge

A lot of people want an API
Marketplaces want batch verification
Some folks asked for a Chrome extension
Accuracy needs improvement for anime/CGI-style AI images
So the use cases are broader than I assumed.

🛠️ What I’m Building Next
More accurate real-vs-AI detection
Better edited-image detection
API for developers
Optional Chrome extension
Better “explainability” (why it thinks it’s AI)
A simple dashboard to track uploads

❓What I Need Help With
If you’ve built tools that got early traction:
How did you figure out the best customer segment?
Would you price this as API-first, SaaS-first, or freemium?
What analytics tools do you use for early-stage products?
Also, if you want to break it — test weird images and tell me where it fails. I’d love that.

Building this solo, in public.
Week 1 done — excited for Week 2.
