Hey IndieHackers! First post here. I've been documenting this journey on Medium but figured this community would appreciate the real numbers.
The experiment: Build a suite of free browser-based tools and reach $1K MRR purely from organic SEO. No ads, no launches, no paid acquisition.
Where I'm at (Week 5):
13 tools live (PDF merge/split/compress, image resize/crop/compress, video to GIF, markdown to PDF, color picker)
~3,000 monthly visitors
57% direct traffic, 43% search + AI
$0 revenue (intentionally, building traffic first)
The surprise: ChatGPT sends 3x more traffic than Google. I built this for SEO, but AI referrals are outpacing search. Users ask ChatGPT "how do I merge PDFs" and it recommends QuickTools.one. Privacy-first positioning seems to trigger recommendations.
What's working:
Browser extensions and npm packages generate backlinks automatically
"Boring" low-difficulty keywords rank faster than expected
High retention (57% direct traffic means users come back)
What's next:
More backlinks (currently ~20 referring domains)
Blog content targeting long-tail keywords
Hit 10K visitors before monetizing
Building in public. Will post updates as things progress. Happy to answer questions about the stack, SEO approach, or anything else.
