I'm helping my girlfriend start an Airbnb business.

The idea is to start with small 1-bedroom places, and cater to couples who are doing romantic getaways. That way guests will be less likely to throw parties and cause damage or headaches, plus it's cheaper to find and decorate smaller homes than larger ones.

We're also going to focus on over designing them. Basically creating really distinctive and quirky interior designs that make people want to take and share photos, tell their friends, and include the places in blog posts and listicles that vacationers are likely to find on Google.

Should be a fun adventure :)

My wife and I have had our apartment as an Airbnb for the last few years. It used to make about $16k AUD a year with a long term tenant. On Airbnb it makes $40k. Link below. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out 🙂

Awesome! Any tips for someone just getting started? I'm curious how you're optimizing for profitability, what kind of occupancy rate you're getting, etc.

        1. 1

Ok, I just logged in to the management platform to see what the stats look like... and it's pretty sparse! I could work out an occupancy rate but I'd have to open each monthly statement and tally them up! 😫 It only went on Airbnb in the December prior to COVID so we're yet to see a "normal" year but we can't complain so far.

We run ours through a management company called Hometime. The bonus is it's 99% hands-off (unless there's a real crisis that needs our input).

We have a young family. I work but my wife is on maternity leave with our boys. If we didn't have kids we'd likely manage it ourselves but we don't want to be dragging kids there three times a week to clean the place or to be spending more time than we need to on our phones messaging guests.

The pro's to having it managed is it's completely hands-off. They take care of the communication with the clients, cleaning, pricing, the lot.

The con's are they charge 20% and you have less control. We put a lot of effort into styling our apartment and the cleaners don't always present it the way we would ourselves.

20% is steep but seems to be industry standard. Even with that hefty fee, we still managed to turn a negatively geared apartment that required about $10k a year to support into a neutrally geared property.

If we managed it ourselves, we could take another $15k out of it but it would be a headache for us and it wouldn't scale if we want to replicate it.

It sounds like you have a solid plan for styling but make sure it looks incredible and don't skimp on the photography. You know yourself how much of a difference it makes when you book a place.

As for optimising for profit, there's a few software packages now that take care of it all for you. They compare the market, not just on Airbnb but all the platforms like booking.com etc. It's great because you don't need to worry about over or under-pricing. I've been blown away a couple of times but how high a price someone has paid only yo find out there's an event on I knew nothing about and there's hardly any accommodation available.

Again, feel free to email me if you have any other questions and make sure you send me the link when it's live! 1) I'm keen to see how you do and b) Seattle is on my list of places to visit! 😉

          Rich

Hey Courtland. I’m up and about at the moment (Anzac day in Australia), but when I get home I’ll dig out some details. I can flick you an email if you like? The software that tracks and suggests pricing is incredible. We see booking well in excess of what we would charge without it, purely due to supply and demand.

          1. 1

Hey I’d love it if you could send it my way too please?

            Thanks!

Long time reader, first time poster. My brothers and I own an STR business and other rentals (ie jet skis, 4Runners with attached tent for camping, etc) business.

To help us run the business we are making an integrated crm and advertising platform to aid in tracking bookings across a variety of platforms, as well as do direct listings.

This tool is still in very early stages, but we have a landing page (built with carrd.co that I discovered on this awesome site :) to gauge interest at jchrentals.com.

    3. 1

Is there a waiting list or something? It could interest me & my gf for our next roadtrip :)

    4. 1

I think there's definitely a market for this, as me and my girlfriend always go to airbnb when we travel ; and it's true that the places where we do "romantic getaways" are often not really romantic ahaha

I think the main deciding parameter will always be the the cost, so keep this in mind and make sure it remains affordable :)

    5. 1

This seems like an incredible idea! Kudos to bae! Is she going to be renting the properties and then creating Airbnb’s for them or buying 1bedrooms? I’m sure renting would be a faster process for her. Good luck to you both! Let us know how it goes :)

      1. 1

Renting for now. It's tough to convince owners to let you do this, but possible. There seem to be lots of YouTubers etc. who talk about how to do this more successfully.

Hi, I am building the best curated list of job boards in the world in public, inspired by the minimalist way (PHP HTML CSS JavaScript and no frameworks) of Pieter Levels from Nomadlist.

The website went viral on Reddit last sunday, the post had 793k views 🔥 on less than 48 hours.

Already sold all sponsorship slots for this month, and also some of the following one plus post upgrades.

    Looking for feedback and opinions!

    https://jobboardsearch.com

    Thanks a lot, Rod 😀

    1. 1

How did you make it go viral on Reddit, Can you please share the process or experience? Was there any strategy or was it just random luck?

      1. 2

The website was already having some traction, since I tweeted about it immediately there was interest also because Pieter from NomadList made a couple of RTs, he also DMd me and gave some advice like to change the name and it worked, he really inspired me, the best day ever the site had 1.2k views in a day before the Reedit post, and also some sponsorship from boards.

Last Sunday I was getting ready to go to the beach and saw a guy that posted his startup on Reddit, so I did the same, just a short title and the link. Right away the traffic was like mad, folks commenting on the posts, everyone saying it was helpful, it was a blast. The website had 57k views in less than 48 hours!

Check my pinned tweet that I share some stats, also a bunch of folks recommended me to write about the experience so I am doing an article, I don't know where to post it, to be honest.

        Thanks for asking 😀

    Busy building my newsletter - insanelyusefulwebsites.com 🚀

I crossed 2,000 subscribers on Wednesday and I'm closing in on 3,000 subscribers today 🤯

    1. 2

Nice work! Looks like a well-curated list. How are you marketing it?

      Just submitted ThreadNotes.com 👍

I'm building Dupple (https://dupple.com) every night and weekend after my day job at Amazon.

Dupple is a community platform that allows you to centralize engaging discussions, events, feedbacks - in one place, under your own brand. It's 100% free.

We've just launched so do not hesitate to give it a try :)

          Same issue for me mate

          1. 1

            Hey Vongole,

You clicked on get started, filled the form, clicked submit and you didn’t receive any email?

We are taking this issue very seriously so please give the most details you can so that we identify what’s happening

            1. 1

Oh I did get an email after a while but the form just resets when you sign up - no confirmation or anything

              1. 1

                What browser do you use?

Normally there’s a little notification that appears telling you that you should receive an email when you submit the sign up form. If you did not see it please tell me!

    I am working on https://www.threadweaver.co/

There are some valuable threads on Twitter. But they get lost with time. You can bookmark them, but managing bookmarks in Twitter is not a fun experience.

Threads are converted to posts, which makes it easy for users to consume the content.

    It solves 2 problems

    1. Thread collection for creators
    2. Thread discovery for consumers

I've imported Sahil Bloom's threads. Check them out here -> https://www.threadweaver.co/u/sahilbloom

My cofounder left his job while I have been helping him mostly during the weekends. We have pivoted a few times.

The latest project is Dashibase (https://dashibase.com/), a no-code way to create user-facing dashboards because we got annoyed by coding the same few things for every project (user authentication, crud functionalities, app dashboard, etc.).

We have one customer who paid so far, so long way to go!

      1. 1

Thanks! Would love your feedback if you do try it. :)

    Hey, fellow indie builders!

    I'm building Videodeck. http://videodeck.co/

    Videodeck

Videodeck is a productized service that helps companies kickstart video production.

What started as a side project turned into an 8k MRR business in 3 months.

I build a Free / Open source alternative to "Obsidian Publish" (https://obsidian.md/publish)

The demo version / Introduction is at here: https://mindstone.tuancao.me/

I hope to turn it into a paid product in the future.

    image

  10. 3

I'm building https://10015.io - an all-in-one toolbox offering free online tools for developers and designers. Its MRR is around $300 and it is growing day by day.

    1. 1

      What is your business model?

      1. 2

I'm using AdSense for monetization. I'm planning to offer a paid plan and separating some features for pro plan. But I'm not fan of paid tools, so I'm not sure if people pay for it.

    2. 1

https://10015.io definitely goes to my bookmarks 🔥 Excellent job done, Fatih.

      1. 1

Thanks @semdzh. I'm working hard for creating a valuable product for free of use.

        1. 1

I can see that a ton of work has been done. There are a lot of useful features. And it's all free! Absolutely valuable product.

I would suggest adding a simple subscription plan to hide ads.

          1. 1

I don't know if it works as you have to stop AdBlock access for such thing to work. Many ad-sensitive people use AdBlock and I don't want to force anyone to deactivate AdBlock or upgrade.

Once, I thought to offer "you pay and request any online tool and I will develop it for you" type of service, but again I'm now sure if it works. :)

            1. 2

Got it. Anyway, I wish you good luck with your side project ;)

  11. 3

I got so tired of remote presenters saying "next slide please" so I built https://fonner.gitlab.io/shared-slides-clicker/

Right now I'm working nights and weekends trying to upgrade it to MV3 before Chrome stops supporting MV2. So far I haven't done any advertising so it's been growing just by word of mouth and organic search.

🔥 This is Owwly - place where you can promote your side project, find new users and make it more popular

    1. 2

Nice! I've been following Owwly for a while now. Do you do any outreach to find startups or is it completely organic?

      1. 1

I would say totally organic from couple months :) we have a plan to add more valuable content/SEO friendly which should increase Owwly's visibility in google search.

    2. 1

Why did you start owwly? Isn’t there « enough » competition? What value do you add?

Thanks for the opportunity Allen :)

man really good job with the landing page

Hey, what's your business model? How does it work? Is it a SaaS?

      1. 1

        It's not a SaaS, It's a RaaS. (Research as a Service Model).

I have shared a lot of data-driven insights that will help affiliate marketers.

Are you into affiliate marketing or interested? This product will help you choose the best affiliate programs and get you insights into that niche like keyword research, promotion strategies, audience insights, etc.

Hi! I’m building newsbundler.com, a marketplace where paid newsletter authors can team up and sell bundles of their newsletters.

News Bundler publishes them in a directory, allows people to curate bundles, sells them to subscribers, collects money via Stripe and sends a share of the revenue to each author.

All fully automated, so authors can go back to do what they love: writing.

I always use the slogan: “Create your own writer collective within 30 minutes.”

Hello! I just finished and released my beta on https://freshenv.io

This is a solution to a problem I have always had. I like my system to be clean, minimal and structured. It gets quite tricky to manage multiple projects on my on machine, projects tend to gather and are placed everywhere. Overtime managing system wide dependencies becomes a problem. It is quite easy to mess up a system setting or to keep track of a package I wont need tomorrow. This is why I built Freshenv.
It is a command line application which helps developers in running and managing completely isolated developer environments locally. It builds and lets you run environment flavours in the form of docker containers which are preconfigured with tools and packages developer needs everyday. Read about the usage below. I imagine it would help developers like me. I hope you like it.

    Feedback is very much appreciated.

I'm starting to build an audience around UX through doing case studies. It takes me ~30 to 40 hours to do each.

My goal is to, in 2 years, have my first client and start scaling an agency Designjoy style, but more focused on user experience/psychology rather than UI design.

Take a look at my content if you'd like!

@csallen started building content, a chrome extension, and a PE fund at https://www.rehacks.io in October' 2021 - all about real estate investing to get financial freedom.

    Grew my Twitter to 44.2K
    Website to 2,500 subs

      This is sick!

I was building something similar last year (https://www.landingpageexamples.io/) but started working on some other stuff and neglected the project lol.

      Hope uxboard.io gets some attention!

        Hi @OmidG,

Thanks for your comment. Why did you abandon your idea? Users found the platform unnecessary or the platform could not find the target audience?

        Thanks!

        1. 2

I think there's a good market for this kind of stuff. There are some pretty big websites in this space:

          https://saaslandingpage.com/ (100k visitors/month)
          https://www.landingfolio.com/ (170k visitors/month)

I just had too many projects going on and had to prioritize.

I've been building my site called Remote Work Junkie, which covers content for job seekers and employers. I've built a Top 100 Companies Hiring Remotely page, a growing weekly newsletter, numerous guides, and a job board as well. Re-thinking note-taking in the browser. I'm building Membr, a note-taking app that lives in your browser (for now).

Unlike other note-taking apps, Membr doesn't force you to context switch by opening a new browser tab or app window. You are able to efficiently write notes and instantly access them across all browser tabs. Membr works the way you do.

Look great. But after installing the extension, it doesn't seem to allow me take note when clicking on the extension. 🤔

You might have to refresh the current tab you're on. Plus the extension doesn't work when you're on the Chrome Web Store.

My first project will be a community of people who want to do it with me -

It’s still in production and isn’t live yet but I’ll be launching on Product Hunt on June 1st.

If you’d like to come along for the ride, let me know! 😍

Hey there Allen, I'm working on a Remix SaaS kit and at the same time, working on an invoicing SaaS app using the kit so I spot real-world scenarios for a full boilerplate.

  49. 2

I just launched this as a side project: it's an indie hacker (unofficial) twitter community - I wonder how active people who already use Twitter - might be on this new sub-platform: https://twitter.com/i/communities/1517800711689486337
It feels like a big group DM :)

  50. 2

I'm not sure if it counts, but I've been working on a new blog as part of my freelancer/consultant marketing strategy. Started earlier this week, first post is going live on Monday!

    1. 2

A blog is a great side project! I started that way and always encourage people to start a blog because we can learn so much from it. Publishing the first blog is always scary. So kudos!

I love flowers, their smell, and their look, and I also see some symbolism in them for many things. So my hobby is that I collect bouquets of different flowers. It is very interesting because it allows my imagination to create full-fledged art. Recently I bought roses in bulk wholesale from https://fiftyflowers.com/collections/roses and in the evenings I create a bouquet of yellow roses. It looks very cool.

I'm building tuthub.io, a database and search engine to find the best programming tutorials on any given topic. I have a programming Youtube channel with over 200k subscribers and felt there was a need for this kind of tool.

    I'm building an AI-powered travel guide: https://www.karambol.io

It works like a search engine and aims to provide relevant travel itineraries while matching one's travel preferences.

As a traveler, I'm quite frustrated by paper guides. Way too long to read! Plus, I feel the editors add new “must see” things every year just to justify the new edition. I'm also frustrated at travel blogs where storytelling is over-used.

I like having the “best of the best” places to visit and have help building my itinerary. I know many others work the same way. This is why I started Karambol 😊.

Hi all, I am Sandeep. I have been working with Electronjs and its related tool since 2017. I have even contributed to electron-builder.

There is one big issue in electron-updater's update mechanism which was not been solved to date. There is no support for delta updates. There is support for the differential update which is pretty poor. A simple change downloads around a couple of MBs. Sometimes even more than 40MBs.

I have been working on this problem for 2 years now. Finally able to create a solution that uses binary diffing and is able to update the app just by downloading a couple of KBs.

It took longer than expected to launch. It works as a plugin of electron-builder.

We've just launched a new version, so feel free to give it a try :)

The first one is https://invertimo.com/ - it's an open source investment tracking software that can help you be organized comes tax time and also understand your investments. I see especially big potential with applying it to crypto space that is actually pretty complex and it's easy to end up with hundreds of transactions if you get regular income, e.g. from staking.

The second one (more recent!) is https://watchlimits.com/ - which helps you watch content responsibly and can save you time! It's in a pretty early stage and I have lots of features idea I want to still implement, but it's useful already.

Finding time to work on newclick.io! I recently changed my H1 to better reflect the features customers actually pay for. Seems to have helped as our bounce rate is down and conversions slightly up 😄

I JUST launched this morning. A top to bottom rewrite of a back burner project that I've had for years. Enough was enough, it was time to get it out the door.

I've always wished Heroku data clips had support for my own databases. I don't want a bunch of other fancy features from an expensive database tool. Just the basics, done well.

So, that's QueryClips. IndieHackers get first month free with coupon code INDIE.

I've been working on webofveterans.com. I have the mobile version built. Honeslty, it's more of a landig page for now (e.g., sign up & message with questions). I'm in the process of working with several developers who freelance to help build a full responsive page. I need to focus my time on recording course material. I'm building a course for veterans to help them transition into careers in the civilain job market. Addtionally, I tie the course to our network, hence the name web, to help job seekers make internal connections to the company of their chioce through alternate avenues such as ERGs/BRGs. I experienced the pain myself. Any veterans/civlians looking to help veterans on here who want to connect let me know! I'd love to hear more about your journey.

Have been working on this project for about 3 months and launched 3 weeks ago, and yesterday launched on Product Hunt. I am making a place to create more engaging and functional contents. Please check it out! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/answeryou

I've build passalong.info, a place where people can store sort of steps to help the ones she/he cares in case something happens to them. Made with memento mori in mind.

    1. 2

What determines when a condition is met to pass the info along to the successor?

      1. 1

Hi @sriyoda, thank you for your question. After you insert the information you wish to pass along, we'll send an email every month, so that you can log in to keep us up to date. If you don't log in, we'll send an email to each person that you registered asking for Date of Birth and Place you met, then allowing them to access the information you stored.

Working on job board with remote jobs: https://fullyremotejobs.io/

    1. 1

I like the idea, how do you deal with competition? Are there many competitors?

      1. 1

I would not deal with competition in the jobboard niche. I would better be working on reaching more people sotje companies see posting there as worthwhile.

        1. 1

If there are too many platforms it might be negative for him right?

But of course if think that the quality & quantity of job offers on his platform will be the key to success

          1. 1

Quality and quantity of the catalogue does not mean if there is no audience to consume it. It is a chicken & egg problem.

Distribution of those jobs is the key. More competitors is the answer. Before the pandemic I do not remember having more than 10 quality options. Now there is that and more.

  176. 1

I put together a basic demo page for my latest project https://feedbackbutton.io and a new invoice template for https://docamatic.com 😄

I built a personal twitter growth tool.. it allows you to follow 10 people a day that are automatically gathered from an algorithm...

People are then automatically unfollowed after 5 days if they do not follow back...

So far I have aroun 35% retention rate on the accounts I tried.. :)

Working to make this available for all soon

    I'm building easypanel.io - a modern server control panel.

You can think of it as "self-hosted Heroku". It helps you deploy Node.js, Ruby, Python, PHP, Go, and Java applications.
