Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Apr 19th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

    Hi everyone!

Iโ€™m Christian, and two friends and I are building Hexicon, a strategic multiplayer word game currently in open beta: https://hexiconapp.com. We have been working on this for a couple of years on the side and finally formed a company last year - Scatterbrain Studio, LLC!

We also have some plans under way to move into the board game space this year - by turning an existing board game into an app under contract. Eventually, we may also develop a tool for the board game community and related businesses if all goes well.

We have been following the IH movement for a while, and I at least have gone through about 80 episodes of the IH podcast at this point (RIP productivity at full time job). Weโ€™re aiming to one day work full time on Scatterbrain with revenue from these projects though! Looking forward to sharing our progress with everyone here!

    Hey everyone,

I'm Yahia, a Boston University CE senior. Going down the software route and enjoying it quite a bit so far.

A few months ago, I joined StockAlarm.io to lead growth efforts and do some backend dev work. It's been a ton of fun as I was originally a user who kept asking for more features and eventually joined as a dev building said features!

    Nice to meet everyone!

    Hello everyone,

Discovered this community upon @harrydry (MarketingExamples.com) recommendation. Thanks to him.

During this pandemic I created a cryptic twitter account and formed a business partnership on Twitter with a prominent Twitter Celeb (Hint: He's one of the Naval Ravikant's must follow on twitter).

It's been an awesome personal journey for me to do this. Especially during the lockdown from a far away non metropolitan place in India.

    Thanks

    1. 2

      Awesome! Welcome to the party

      1. 1

Thanks Harry. Look forward to learn & share

    Hey guys!

SUPER EXCITED to join Indie Hacker. My name is Holden and I am the Product Manager for Knowmea - a Email Subscriptions Manager (www.knowmea.com). Knowmea helps you manage your messy & scary email subscriptions so you can focus on what's relevant.

So we created Knowmea because, on average, 80% of the subscriptions emails you get either don't peak your interest or are not relevant to you. And we wanted to change that so you don't have to waste time looking at those emails, you just have to pay attention to the emails relevant to you.

Love to hear what you guys think and happy to be part of the community :)

  15. 1

    Hi everyone!

My name is Laura. I'm a web and app designer; my partner, Connor, is a self-taught developer. We spent the last two years freelancing but just ended all our client work in December to pursue making our own products full-time!

Our first prototype is https://www.learnlistt.com. The concept is that we always want great podcasts for while we cook, interesting videos for after work, etc. but it's kind of a pain to scour the internet for high-quality stuff. So we turned to our friends and asked them to make lists of their favorite links in topics they care about. Now Learnlistt is a way for anyone to easily make and share these lists of resources for others to learn from. No clue where it's headed, but the journey has been a blast so far.

Despite working in tech, I've always felt nervous posting in online communities. Then after reading How I Went from Indie Lurker to Indie Hacker by @lynnetye, I realized I've been missing out on so much feedback, support and learning. So I am really excited to have finally signed up for IH, and am looking forward to meeting rad folks making stuff!

  16. 1

    Hi all,

I'm Alex, a software engineer interested in chat bots, face recognition, developer tools and APIs.

Looking forward to make more and be a part of the community.

Hi I'm James, my partner and I are building a curation community for all things ethical and sustainable in an immersive mobile app. more at www.getgoodhuman.com. excited to be here!

    1. 1

      Hi James,
that's a nice project you have there, the website have a really nice and fresh look!

Maybe it would be useful to specify on on the landing page that it is an app and what can you do with it because it wasn't so evident when I read the first sentence.
I got it from the mock up and the "get" in the domain name but people less patient might just give up. I guess if it's an app it's more for people between 20-40 years old.

As well I'm not sure about who vet the product? the users of the app? Goodhumain project team? Both?
Is it more like a network dedicated for people interested in ethic and sustainability or can you purchase on it as well?

I was eager to see more but I don't have a smartphone or a tablet for I didn't find a brand to fit my ethic values for now. If you know one I'm interested!

I'm curious to see how your project will evolve in the future, congratulations and good luck!

Hi everyone! I officially launched Palestine Tech Jobs a couple weeks ago - a jobs board to help Palestinians find remote software developer roles with international companies.

In a previous life I was a journalist living and working in Israel/Palestine but I've always been fascinated by tech and made a mid-career switch to become a web developer.

Inspired by the Wired documentary "Holy Land: Startup Nations" and the work of my friend @MichaelBerhane with pocitjobs.com, I looked into the tech employment situation for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

The results were pretty stark: about 3,000 engineering and computer science students graduate every year from major Palestinian universities and yet youth unemployment reached 44% in 2018! Meanwhile, in countries such as the US, UK and even in the Gulf region, the demand for engineering talent (prior to Corona at least) has been hitting new levels every year as software continues to "eat the world".

While this is a challenging part of the world to focus your business on (to say the least!) I believe there could be a big opportunity here. This is my first business venture of any kind so I'm sure plenty of mistakes will be made along the way, but really looking forward to connecting with other indie makers and sharing lots of advice and support!

  33. 1

Hi , I am a hacker with skills in F/E, B/E, cloud devops, and blockchain. I worked at a current crypto exchange doing Data Science/ Backend and algo trading. Currently work at a music label/distro company head manning the big data infra and analytics platform build out. I'm pretty obsessive with figuring out problems and am currently scouting out ideas for a product.
Really stoked to have found this place.
    Cheers

  35. 1

    Good evening all

I'm Darren, and I'm starting what could be an amazing business with a friend. He's the idea guy, I can build anything, together hopefully we can sell.

I'm new to entrepreneurship - I've been a rank and file coder for almost all of my career. I've built a lot of good things for other people, now it's time to build something wonderful for myself.

I'm also new to the idea of Indie Hackers, but it seems like a fantastic community. I can't wait to get my feet wet and get some great advice on how to build a successful business.

    -Darren

Hi! I'm Ian Remmel and I built check-run-reporter.com because I was so frustrated by digging through pages of CI logs to find out which of my tests failed.

I'm really happy with how well it's working, and I have a few customers, but I've gotten less traction than I'd hoped. I guess I'm here to learn what strategies folks have used to market their semi-niche products without spending more money than a bootstrapper can afford.

    Hey everyone -

Steven here. I run a web software consulting company helping small businesses and startups improve their tech and ship code faster. I put together a website showcasing my services @ https://theenginebox.com

I like to focus on building and shipping next-gen websites and web apps and I'm great with development, but marketing and UX design is my weakness. I contract out when it makes sense and have been able to build some really great products. Looking to find others in a similar spot.

I've been binging the podcasts here and reading everything I can find - looking forward to talking to you all.

Hi my name is Josh and I am the cofounder of DoorFoto.com where we make customized fabric door covers for all holidays and any occasion. We launched the website in 2019 and sold ~ 50k worth of product. This year we will do ~ $250k. I am hoping to learn new growth techniques without having to give all of our money to Google and Facebook as we havenโ€™t had much success with these channels. Would also love to learn how to increase our conversions from 0.7% to < 2%. Looking forward to learning new things and meeting new people.

    Hey guys,

I'm Bola from Nigeria. I actually got to know about IH from reading a blog post by Product school on how to get a product management job, and I must say here that I'm feeling so lucky to have discovered this.

Having said that, I work presently at the bottom of the pyramid space where I help rural women to access credit and hence bring them to financial inclusion.

As it is, there isn't much going on in that space in terms of innovation and making technology work for these folks. That's my mission - I wanna create solutions at the BOP space.

I wanna make this my side project to be able to create an app to bank the poor which I can also use to show a PM recruiter as I'm trying to pivot into a Product Management role.

I hope I can get valuable help, feedback, insights, collaboration, partnership, resources, etc on how to bring this to fruition? I actually don't know how to code but I'm a domain expert in financial inclusion and group lending, and I'm presently in a product school.

Anybody here that can help create a prototype to start with? Hit me up, pls!

  43. 1

    Yo guys!

I'm Franz, freelance fullstack web app developer https://www.frantisekpobocek.com/ (React + Nodejs/ .NetCore). Been coding for quite a long time and still excited to do more and connect with other enthusiasts :).

    See you around :)

Hello everyone! This tab was burning a hole every time I opened my laptop for work. Debated on just closing it, but it seemed like signing up was easier, so here we are.

I'm Anthony. Seems I have quite a bit of free time during all of this as I have primarily done work as valuation consultant for some VCs in the bay area as well as a data scientist helping some start-ups prototype/automate their MVPs/early products. A few years ago, I launched an automated investment firm based on plenty of free time researching/school work as I picked up an interest on the data - R/Python realm.

Decided to join today because I've had a bit of an itch to join or build something more exciting where I can sink my teeth into truly growing (as an independent contractor, I basically automated 75% of the work I used to do by hand). Last fall, I jumped in to a project that a friend was working on- an insurance start-up - but despite the promise (her team got into an accelerator to further the product), it didn't excite me enough to jump all the way in. Hoping I can find something!

I've followed @csallen and Indie Hackers for a while now, mainly at the rec of Ryan Hoover @ Product Hunt. Let's see how we can work together!

Now looking for my next opportunity / start something of my own! :) Great to meet you all!

I am here because of my good friend @colinmacinnis' recommendation. I currently work in Higher Ed, teaching students human-centred design. I am on here because of COVID, I figure it is the best time to start a project on the side. I am getting many requests for "ergonomics" consultations or training as a result of people being stuck at home. Chat soon...D

    Hi people,

I'm Stevan, Head of Business Development at FishingBooker, a bootstrap startup that turned into a scale-up. It started 6 years ago as an idea and now working in 110 countries around the world. I joined the company at a young age 5 years ago as a Sales & Marketing specialist and had a chance to go through a bunch of stuff, but I'm looking into starting something on my own (and it doesn't have to be a unicorn).

Although I have a good track record in business I'm still struggling to start and be consistent. Now I'm looking for ideas to test and reading about the best practices to test things fast.

Looking forward to joining the group!

    Cheers,

Honestly, getting a real hacker is very rare but I found an assembly of the finest hackers in Munich, Texas & Paris. They do a wide variety of hacks such as intercepting bank transfers, hacking into sophisticated devices such as phones, computers, CCTVโ€™s, ATM Cards and much more. They show proof of their authenticity. You can contact them for any kind of hack you need at โ€œJamiehacking99 @ Gmail . Comโ€

    Hey everybody!

Iโ€™m Alex, currently a machine learning engineer at IBM cognitive group.

Iโ€™m heavily involved in the SaaS space and currently launching Scale Academy, a growth accelerator for high-potential SaaS startups (https://www.scaleacademy.co/)

Weโ€™ve got a solid team - our FB Ads partner managed $2M in FB ad spend in 2019 alone.

We also serve e-commerce customers - we target $20k MRR growth for SaaS through outbound sales and aim for 4-6x return on ad spend for our e-commerce clients.

Iโ€™m always looking to partner, whether it be people who need data science skill, or those looking to scale their startups and donโ€™t quite know how or donโ€™t have the marketing expertise.

The culture of building here is truly inspiring and I look forward to building with you all. Donโ€™t hesitate to reach out!

    Hey everyone,

Just joined after following and listening to a few podcast episodes over the last few weeks. I'm a recent college grad working as an engineer for a large company. In the weeks between graduating college and starting work, I worked out some concepts/code for an event ticketing platform. I haven't worked on the project consistently since starting work, but now I'm trying to change that. I'm a self-taught coder, and this will be my first full product.

    Hi Indies,

I'm Sitesh, currently Product Owner at Tiqets and based out of Amsterdam.
I stumbled here while picking up some best remote practices around building and scaling products & teams, as we are going through forced adoption due to COVID forced lockdown.

I've tried to create 2 products back in 2016 (1st security SaaS from India - reaching till YC batch selection final stage and 2nd App-based local discovery from the Netherlands), which didn't work out for different reasons.
I'm attempting to launch useful sustainable products in 2020 and potentially can be scaled up.
Here to learn and find potential ideas & collaborators around them!

    Hi everyone,

I'm Kevin, working as product management for a startup. I love building products. We typically use No- Code platforms to build products. It's been an amazing journey so far with so much learning and experiences.

    Nice to meet everyone!

    1. 1

Hey Kevin, nice meeting you. What you're doing sounds super interesting. I'm such a big fan of using platforms/pre-existing solutions/boilerplates to build my products... It's the biggest learning I have from the past couple of years - DON'T start on a blank slate trying to do everything from scratch.

Yeah. It's amazing how these No-code platforms have evolved. I'm pretty excited what the future holds out for No-code.

    Hi all,
I am a web app developer (mostly bubble.io), I studied business and worked in a lot of industries and have a robot product prototype.

The old version of my app is www.dreamifyer.com. Its a strategic productivity app, a mix of Tony Robbins, Todoist and more to help you achieve your dreams. Right now I am planning my beta version marketing channels and building the next release of the app with some better navigation features, removal of bugs and a better appearance.

      Hi Angelique,
      Here is my site https://biizly.com/
      Any thoughts?

      1. 1

        Hi Zac,
Do you want feedbacks on design or if I would be interested using this service?

          1. 1

I'm not sure I am in your target audience but I can give you general feedback.

The introduction for each resource on your landing pages are missing some concrete examples to better understand how they can help. Is it about laws, about how to use the social media?

Is it as well for people who already have a shop on the street and want to to start selling online as well?

From a design perspective, your website would gain a lot if it looked more modern. Look on dribbble or behance to see some examples. Good luck!

    Hey!

I'm Will, from Colorado, USA. I'm a marketing/branding professional that has been working on developer tools for the last few years. Happy to have discovered this forum!

I've been working on MESG.com for a few years. It's a development tool meant to speed up development and enable an economy of app development.

We're launching a new product shortly called liteflow.com built on the previous product, MESG which is an app-building framework intended to be much more customer-friendly. It will speed up the product launch, maintenance and upgrade times for developer-entrepreneurs

The new project means a new, and bigger target audience, so I'm eager to learn all I can from this community, and am quite excited to have stumbled upon it!

    Hey everyone!

I'm a Product Manager at Intercom and I've heard great things about this community. Having only worked on established products, I'm excited to start learning about the very earliest stages.

    Hej everyone,
I'm Marco, a designer / developer building WordPress websites since 2009. I started a side-project, wespeedup.com, earlier this year. With wespeedup I help website owners to speed up their WP website for better performance, without having to figure out all this tech stuff themselves. I know there are plugins for this, and I do use them. I'm however sure the majority of small company owners are not so into all the plugins and functionalities and would rather pay someone who is an expert then trying themselves and wasting a lot of time / money on it and get frustrated :). What are you thoughts?

I love the focused product offering. No upsells or addons - just a simple productized service.

I'm a curious engineer involved in the startup sector. Currently working as product manager in a travel startup.

I'm very interested in the product development journey and I'm developing a web app to help people to collect ideas and easily share them in a group in order to receive feedback.
If anyone would like to discuss the topic or maybe already knows some apps/tools that do something similar to that, let's have a chat!

    Hey all,

I'm Ben from London - cofounder / CTO of metomic.io

I love tech, building things, and people who build things. Looking forward to seeing what everybody here comes up with :)

Also super interested doing privacy "better" - and making it easier to make things that are privacy-aware. It feels like there is so much support in tech tooling for building product, but very little for getting privacy right. If this strikes a chord with anyone, would love to connect!

I'm looking to supplement my income by creating my own web apps. I feel like indiehackers is a great place to get ideas and motivation. Last week I helped build and launch a list of startups raising VC during the pandemic https://raisingduringcovid.liist.io. I'd been kicking around the idea for a no-code website for list-based sites -> https://liist.io and that was the push I needed to get on with building it.

    Hi everyone,

I am Paschal, co-founder at Brainxo.com. At Brainxo we are building a system that eliminates the need for armies of data scientists for businesses by automating the majority of the process.

As you can imagine, that is a tough and difficult infrastructure to build. We have a closed beta but will be opening it up soon. You can shot me an email at [email protected] if you would like to see things for yourself.

I look forward to learning more from the community and wish you all a success.

  185. 1

    Hi everyone, I'm Stein!
I'm currently in my first of year working as a software developer, specializing in backend development and cloud architecture.
My first business was started in university, but it didn't get enough traction, so just recently we (my partner and I) decided to let it go.

I love the motivation and feeling of ownership of having your own project/business, and I'm constantly on the lookout for starting something, once again!

  186. 1

Hi. I'm Mason. I've been a freelance/contract web developer for the past 3-4 years, slowly cultivating my skills and professional network. Most of my skills are in the realm of fullstack JavaScipt development, with the majority of my professional experience on the frontend โ€” I build applications with Node.js, React, TypeScript, GraphQL, and other related tech.

I've never worked at a company because personal growth and autonomy have always been my major priorities โ€” taking weeks (or even months) at a time to tinker on projects, to grow my skills/knowledge, or to travel and explore hobbies. Lately, I've been reassessing that conviction, as so many companies are now starting as, or moving towards being, "remote-first".

I originally became a web developer to have the freedom mentioned above, and also because I was already interested in software and the web. That motivation eventually evolved into also wanting to work on my own products โ€” to truly work for myself (or, rather, my own users). A lot of that motivation came from learning what an "indie hacker" is, and that there are plenty diverse examples of successful indie hackers. This website and it's accompanying podcast have been a big influence in that regard.

However, I have a hard time staying focused and motivated on my own projects. I lose momentum and get discouraged before I even get to an MVP. I can be very introverted and in my own bubble. I think that has something to do with my difficulties. Perhaps, making more of an effort to engage with a like-minded community will help keep me accountable. I've tried a bit of that in the past, in other communities, but usually end up being more of an occasional lurker than an active participant. I think the forum/article nature of IH might help me improve on that โ€” I do enjoy writing (you may have noticed).

I recently dusted off an old idea to solve a pain point of mine. It's a workout tracking application tailored to physical training with gymnastic, acrobatic, a calisthenic based movements. Personally, I've used every means of workout tracking there is โ€” from paper journals to spreadsheets to popular apps. They all have there issues for tracking this type of physical training. Journals don't allow for easy data analysis, spreadsheets are too cumbersome to regularly edit from a mobile device, and major workout tracking apps are too constrained in there assumptions of what users want to track about their training.

    Hi everyone, I'm Mares.

I'm a UX/UI designer with additional studies in Philosophy, Social Psychology, and Business. I'm looking forward to creating transformative products with tangible societal impact. My main interests beyond my field of work are behavioral economics, sentience, the future of food, and the future of no-code development.

If you have any prototypes, user-flows, or high-fidelity mockups you'd like some feedback on, you're welcome to reach out to me by email. I can have a look and will be happy to help.

If you know any software developers passionate about creating more humane technologies, please let me know. I'd love to talk to them.

Hi All - My name is Dan and I'm an Analyst at a software investment firm and former developer.

I struggle with sticking with business concepts. Being exposed to development and investment early on in my career makes operating over a medium term time horizon hard. With that in mind, I'm hoping to find a community to support and sustain my goals and that I can share some of the things I've learned along the way.

Looking forward to meeting you all :)

    Best,
    Dan

    1. 1

      Hi Dan,

Welcome to Indie Hackers. Iโ€™m also new here and I must admit that itโ€™s a great community.
Since you struggle with business concepts.. our Guide may be helpful.
      Here is the link: https://www.indiehackers.com/product/online-business-startup-guide-biizly

      Best regards.

  193. 1

Hi everyone, I'm Danny. I am a freelance software developer. I have been freelancing for almost 10 years. I thought I would finally try to build and sell some software products of my own. This looks like such a supportive and friendly community where I can learn so much from and help others. I'm glad to have found it :)

    1. 1

i'm glad you're here! it's one of the best! what is the first product that you're going to build?

      1. 1

@8bit I have some ideas for productivity apps, mainly for freelance software developers. I'd like to try and gauge interest on some ideas. The first one is a desktop timesheet/invoicing app where I'd like to unify timesheet apps into one (as a freelancer I have to juggle a few timesheet apps imposed by clients) and add some tools for defining budgets and adding revenue goals. I love to build so it should be a fun one to put together if there is interest.

So, what brings you to indiehacker?

        1. 1

i'm here because this place is a very friendly and helpful community! that's all i can ask for, right?

        2. 1

@embpdaniel Juggling multiple timesheet/invoicing app data is a frustration I also know too well, as a fellow freelance developer. Especially when tax season comes around, and I need to export, normalize, and organize everything.

It'd be great to have a single interface that could sync with major timesheet apps (Harvest, Toggl, etc.) โ€” similar to how apps like Mint and Toshl give you a single unified dashboard for viewing incomes and expenses from all your bank/credit accounts. I know those rely services like Plaid for syncing all that data. Something for timesheets could at least take in the exported data from apps and know how to parse and organize them all.

Hi @metamas, thank you for that feedback. Yeah I think a lot of us deal with this, and it is a big hassle. Makes you think too much about something that should be so simple. A lot of the apps have APIs that should make this possible. I guess I need to look into their docs more and see the type of data I can extract.

Hi, my name is Andrew Sus and I spent 10+ years designing.

Last 3 years I worked in the online education area helping Preply and Mindojo achieve their goals. At the same time, the best way for me to learn something is to reach people with specific experience and ask for a specific advice. I did it a lot (still doing). Then I discovered that 1-on-1 video calls work better as I can describe my problem better and receive a better advice with examples and personal approach. Then I discovered that paid advices work much better than free. Finally, I discovered that the knowledge by itself means a little without being applied. And the biggest barrier to apply the knowledge is uncertainty how to make a first step.

So I come with the idea for my personal side project. I want to validate it. And I'll try to validate it and possibly make it happen with your help.

    1. 1

      video is the future...!

what is the side project? have you created a product yet?

      1. 1

No, not yet. I am researching and talking to people in different niches to understand the demand and possible supply. That is why Iโ€™ve joined this beautiful community.

As for the idea, it is pretty simple. Whatever we do, eventually we come to a challenge we lack experience to overcome. And we do it in different ways. The most effective though is to get advice from someone with that experience.

Now, how to find those people, how to get them talk to you, how to make sure they got into your context, how to apply their advice within your own circumstances โ€“ all that can be solved with online technologies. The only question is, do people really need that?

BTW if youโ€™ll have 30 min someday to talk, let me know. I would love to hear how you overcome challenges and what do you think about our idea in its current state.

    Hello,

My name is Curtis Wayne Thomas. I am trying to learn more about mobile app marketing, seo marketing and affiliate marketing. I may contact some companies in the future to learn and hopefully charge in the future, but I am keen to learn. I have limited knowledge about marketing, but I am enjoying it so far.

Hi IH, I'm a designer and developer passionate about creating cool products for the web.
I recently redesigned and relaunched the popular design job board DesignerJobs (https://designerjobs.co). Hoping to interact with the community out here some more and hopefully meet cool like-minded creators

    1. 1

@oliv23 Nice. A straightforward service, executed well, that brings you solid income ๐Ÿ™Œ โ€” if all those postings paid you $249 (did they?)

      1. 1

Metamas, thanks. Right now, some of the jobs are sourced from other websites, but ultimately they should all be paid :)

    2. 1

very cool! is this something you put together yourself? what technology is this built on?

      1. 1

        John,
Yes I made this myself. It's built on Vue.js on the front end and Hapi.js on the back. I try to keep things as simple as possible.

        1. 1

          i'm a super-fan of vue.js! we're using react right now, though.

          1. 1

Yeah, I love the simplicity of it
